Access
Description
American Civil War: Letters and Diaries includes over one thousand memoirs, diaries, and collections of letters written by private soldiers, generals, politicians, and civilians. The database offers intimate, first-hand accounts of the war both on and off the battle field.
Database content has been restricted to include:
- Letters and diaries that were written contemporaneously with the events they describe
- Letters of a personal nature (i.e., official dispatches, reports, military orders, and "public" letters are excluded)
- Memoirs that describe events during the war (1860-1865)
Separate search pages for Diaries, Letters, and Memoirs are provided along with Simple and Advanced search options. The database also includes the option to Find material by original Source, by Author, by Battle, or to locate Events Day-By-Day. Extensive indexing includes, for example, battle, military rank, and allegiance.
