Description
From the first book printed in English by William Caxton, through the age of Spenser and Shakespeare and the tumult of the English Civil War, Early English Books Online (EEBO) will contain the full text of over 125,000 titles when complete. Titles included are those listed in Pollard & Redgrave's Short-Title Catalogue (1475-1640) and Wing's Short-Title Catalogue (1641- 1700) and their revised editions, as well as the Thomason Tracts (1640-1661) and the Early English Books Tract Supplement. The Thomason Tracts comprise 22,000 items, including 400 periodicals, plus parliamentary speeches, news reports, sermons, religious & political tracts, and nearly 100 manuscripts. The Tract Supplement, which will ultimately include nearly 20,000 works, comprises a collection of small items such as broadsides and pamphlets, which were often collected into "scrapbooks," or tract volumes, classified by various criteria such as dates or topics. These tract volumes, primarily from the British Library, allow readers to see the material in the same order as they would when leafing through the original volume.

Among the thousands of titles featured in EEBO are works by Malory, Bacon, More, Erasmus, Boyle, Newton, and Galileo; musical exercises by Henry Purcell and novels by Aphra Behn; prayer books, pamphlets, and proclamations; almanacs, calendars, and many other primary sources. Roughly 118,500 titles were available in EEBO as of the last update, in November 2007.

Scholars and researchers in history, philosophy, religion, literature, linguistics, music, poetry, education, gender studies, mathematics, science, and other fields will benefit from the unique perspective provided by this collection.
