- Description
- Grzimek's Animal Life Encyclopedia, an essential, comprehensive information source, includes
the entire
range of animal life from one cell to more complex organisms. The content is organized by
taxonomic
classification using the scientific names for animals. Chapters on order, class, or family use a
common
structure of sections to describe ecology, evolution, structure and function, life histories
and
reproduction, behavior, biogeography, migration, and conservation. Selected species descriptions
follow
the information about the broader classification. Chapters conclude with a comprehensive species
list,
a reference list and additional resources. The chapters are richly illustrated with distribution
maps,
photographs, paintings and line drawings. Each entry displays in pdf or full text format and
includes a
link to the appropriate citation format.
Searching capabilities include a basic option allowing a single term to be searched in document
title,
keyword or full text. It is also possible to use an advanced search query which permits up to
three
terms to be entered in document title, keyword, full text, image caption, publication title, author
and
links the terms using Boolean operators. Although the content is organized using taxonomic
terminology,
you may search using the common name of the animal of interest. Repeating your search with
the
appropriate genus and species may yield more results. You may locate scientific names for animals in
a
general encyclopedia such as the
Columbia Encyclopedia.
