- Description
- Searchable full-text of more than 350,000 literary works in the English language--343,000 works
of poetry, 5000 dramatic
works, and 2000 prose works; 212 full-text literary journals; the Annual Bibliography of English
Language and Literature; and
reference sources including bibliographies, 4000 author biographies, dictionaries and encyclopedias,
most prominently The New
Princeton Encyclopedia of Poetry and Poetics. Individual units run from Anglo-Saxon literature,
through the Middle Ages and
the Renaissance, the 18th and 19th centuries right up to the late 20th Century. The geographical
span includes the United
States, England, Scotland, Ireland, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the West Indies, Africa, and
South Asia. In addition to
the Core Collection, described above, Rutgers also has access to Twentieth-Century Drama,
which, when complete, will include
2500 plays from the English speaking world, from the 1890s to the present, featuring many works
still under copyright. Also
includes more than 800 brief film clips of poetry readings (many featuring poets reading their own
works), and links to more
than 5100 web sites. A new collection, added in 2010, is The African Writers
Series, featuring more than 250 volumes of fiction, poetry, drama, and non-fiction
prose,
including works by Chinua Achebe, Ama Ata Aidoo, Steve Biko, Buchi Emecheta, Nadine Gordimer, Bessie
Head, Doris
Lessing, Nelson Mandela, Dambudzo Marechera, Christopher Okigbo, Okot p'Bitek and Tayeb Salih.
A particular
strength of this collection is the inclusion of women's poetry from The Heimemann Book of
African Women's Poetry (1995).
LION's general policy has always been to include either an authoritative collected edition
for each author or first editions
of individual works as appropriate. In important instances more than one edition of a work has been
included--for example both
the 1818 and 1831 editions of Frankenstein and five separate editions of Whitman's
Leaves of Grass. All texts are
reproduced faithfully from the original printed sources without silent emendation.
Literature Online (LION) also offers comprehensive cross-searching of EEBO - Early English Books Online, thus bringing
together the two leading textual resources for scholars of Early Modern literature. Results from the
Quick Search and Search
Texts options within Literature Online will include full results from the entire set of
EEBO citation data (125,000 titles).
Since Rutgers also subscribes to EEBO TCP (Text Creation
Partnership), LION searches will also display keyword hits from the
collection of texts within EEBO that have been keyed for full-text searching (as of early
2008 nearly 15,000 titles, with an
ultimate goal of 25,000 titles).
