Description

The American State Papers, 1789-1838 is a rich source of primary material on many aspects of American history. The resource includes over 6,000 publications including every legislative and executive document of the first fourteen U.S. Congresses, plus additional materials such as speeches and messages of Presidents Washington, Adams, Jefferson, and Madison. Historical events such as Lewis and Clark's Expedition, Burr's conspiracy and arrest, and the Treaty of the Creek Indians are also covered.

The American State Papers, 1789-1838 is a critical resource for the study of all aspects of American history including foreign relations; Indian affairs; finance; commerce and navigation; military and naval affairs; genealogy; and political, social, cultural, and ethnic history.

Unlike the U.S. Congressional Serial Set, 1817-1980,  the publications in the American State Papers, 1789-1838 are not divided into reports and documents and do not include House and Senate journals. Approximately two-thirds of the publications cover the first 14 Congresses (1789-1817), whereas the remaining third chronologically overlap with the Serial Set from 1817-1838. The American State Papers is an essential complement to the U.S. Congressional Serial Set, 1817-1980.
