Description

This resource compiles hundreds of thousands of pages of the personal writings of women from the collection of the American Antiquarian Society. Date coverage is approximately 1750-1950, and the collection is particularly strong in the nineteenth century material. The contents consist of high quality images of the original manuscripts, and may be searched by place of origin, destination of correspondence, age of author, occupation of author, author's date and place of birth, date and place of death, marital status, maternal status, religion, and associated historical event. Highlights include the letters written by Ellen Tucker Emerson, eldest daughter of Ralph Waldo Emerson; and the papers of Abby Kelley Foster, noted women's rights advocate and abolitionist, depicting the activities of the antislavery movement in New England, New York, and Ohio.
