Its inherently hierarchical approach to data structure mirrors the information hierarchies that have been a fundamental characteristic of archival description.
Experience with earlier standards implementation such as MARC AMC and the various national content standards has convinced the archival community of the importance and value of using open standards.
SGML is an international standard (ISO 8879).
