Information Literacy and Student Learning at Rutgers: Standards, Competencies, and the Search for Strategies

This symposium explored the development and meaning of the new information literacy requirements from the Middle States Commission on Higher Education and gave an example of how a complex, multi-campus institution is infusing its curriculum with information competence. The symposium was cosponsored by the Executive Vice President, Academic Affairs; the Provost, Camden Campus; the Provost, Newark Campus; the Vice President for Continuous Education and Outreach; the Vice President for Undergraduate Education; the Faculty of Arts and Sciences - New Brunswick; and the Rutgers University Libraries. About the Guest Speakers

Terrence F. Mech

Terrence F. Mech has been Director of the Library at King's College, Wilkes-Barre, PA since 1982. He was the College's Vice-President for Information and Instructional Technologies for seven years (1994-2001). Currently, he serves on the Vice President for Academic Affairs' Academic Team and the College's Self-Study Steering Committee as the Vice Chair for Strategic Planning. Dr. Mech was a member of the Middle States Commission on Higher Education Advisory Panel on Information Literacy that prepared Developing Research & Communication Skills: Guidelines for Information Literacy in the Curriculum (2003). He has served on Middle States Evaluation Teams since 1987. Dr. Mech holds graduate degrees from Pennsylvania State University (higher education-1994), Clarion State College (library science-1979), and Illinois State University (sociology-1978).

Dr. Ilene Rockman

Dr. Ilene Rockman is the Manager of the Information Competence Initiative for the Office of the Chancellor, of the 23 campuses of the California State University (CSU). Among her awards, Dr. Rockman is the recipient of the 2003 "Distinguished Education and Behavioral Sciences Librarian of the Year" award from the Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL), and the 2001 "Literati Award for Excellence" from MCB University Press of the United Kingdom. She is a member of the Executive Committee of the ACRL Institute for Information Literacy, the editorial boards of Library Hi Tech and the Journal of Academic Librarianship, the editor-in-chief of Reference Services Review, and the editor and contributing author to the new book, Integrating Information Literacy into the Higher Education Curriculum: Practical Models For Transformation (Jossey-Bass, 2004).
