How Do I...
...get my article?
- To locate an article you've identified, you'll need to make sure that you have the complete citation information, including:
| VERY IMPORTANT | The Journal title |
| VERY IMPORTANT | The date of publication |
| IMPORTANT | The article title |
| IMPORTANT | The author |
| IMPORTANT | The volume number, issue number, and pages |
-
With this information, you can search for the journal title (NOT the article title) in IRIS to find out if and where it's available at any of the Rutgers University Libraries. (See below for help searching IRIS.)
-
If the title is not listed in IRIS, then use Citation Linker or check the Electronic Journal A-Z List to look for full-text.
- If the Rutgers University Libraries do not have the title and volume you need, and you are a Rutgers University student, staff, or faculty member, you may order the article via interlibrary loan. For help with interlibrary loan, please read How do I order an interlibrary loan?
Help finding a journal title in IRIS
- Go to IRIS, and enter the title of the journal (NOT the title of the article) in the search box.
- Select PERIODICAL TITLE begins with from the pull-down menu to the right of the search box, then click on the Search button.
- IRIS will display an alphabetical list of periodical titles. Pick the one that most closely matches your search.
Note: If the periodical you select is available in more than one format, you may, at this point, see multiple listings for the same title. Select the Details button on any record to view the complete details for that record.
- Look at the information contained in the record.
Example:
If you entered "journal of popular culture" as your periodical title, you would retrieve the following record:

Note the Electronic Access links that appear before the first library listing. This indicates that some portion of the journal is available electronically. To find out if the volume/article that you are looking for is available electronically, click on one of the Electronic Access links. Try additional Electronic Access links if the first one does not include the time period you need.
The most important information to note is the Location and Holdings information listed under each library. This information tells you where to find the journal and indicates the volumes or years of the journal that are located at each of the Rutgers University Libraries.
The notation of "Current" in the Location line indicates that a particular library is currently receiving the journal. The associated Holdings line lists the most recently received issues. In this case, the Alexander, Camden, and Dana Libraries all currently receive the Journal of Popular Culture. Alexander Library, whose "Bound" Holdings listing indicates that it began receiving the journal with volume 1 (1968), has the most complete holdings that are shelved together.
Note that Camden and Douglass also have some issues of the Journal of Popular Culture in microfilm format.
NOTE: You must enter the entire title or the first few words of the title of the journal in order to search IRIS. If you need help deciphering an abbreviation for a journal title, please speak with a reference librarian,
or write to Ask A Librarian.
