Delivery and Interlibrary Loan:
Interlibrary Loan Service: Lending
(Requesting Procedures and Fee Schedule for Libraries)

Interlibrary loan and photocopy services are provided to libraries. Photocopy services are also provided to fee-based information brokers and companies without libraries.

Levels of Service Available

Standard Service

Loan and photocopy requests for books and journals from the Rutgers University Libraries may be sent via OCLC (Symbol: NJR,NJR) JerseyCat, fax, ILLIAD, or any other compatible ISO ILL system, mail, telephone, or by requesting online access to our Interlibrary Loan Lending request page at https://www.rulill.rutgers.edu/illiad/RULILL/lending/lendinglogon.html. First time user click here to register.

Rush Service

Rush requests are accepted over the telephone or fax, and are filled within 24 hours or one working day.

Same Day Service

Same day requests are accepted over the telephone only. If the request is in by 12:00 noon, a reply or the item is sent out by 4:30 p.m.

Shipping and Postage

Unless otherwise indicated, loans (books, microfilm, etc.) are shipped via UPS. Photocopies are sent first-class mail. There is no additional charge to borrowers for domestic UPS or first-class mail shipments.

Loans or photocopies for member libraries of the New Jersey Library Network are shipped via  CD&L  delivery service when possible. Loans or photocopies for METRO member libraries are sent via METRO delivery whenever possible.

Photocopies are delivered via Odyssey or Ariel whenever possible at no additional charge. Fax delivery may be requested, however fees may apply.

Borrowers must make their own arrangements for express or courier service. Federal Express delivery is available and will be billed to the requester's account. Please provide your account number when requesting Federal Express delivery.

Transmitting Documents

Documents can be transmitted via fax, or Odyssey, or Ariel upon request. There is no additional charge for Odyssey or Ariel transmission. Charges for fax transmission are in addition to any other fees:

  • New Jersey - $5
  • Out of State - $5 for the first page, $1 each additional page
  • Foreign - $10 for the first page, $2 each additional page

Invoicing

Copies of requests and invoices are sent monthly and payable upon receipt.

Resource Sharing Agreements

New Jersey

There are no charges for standard service or telefacsimile transmission for nonprofit member libraries of the New Jersey Library Network. For-profit network member libraries receive a combination of 10 standard loans/photocopies per year and are charged for any filled requests beyond ten.

Non-network member libraries are subject to all charges listed under Fees.

Rutgers’ statewide interlibrary loan services are funded by the New Jersey State Library which is responsible for the coordination, promotion and funding of the New Jersey Library Network.

Out of State

There are no charges for standard service or telefacsimile transmission for RLG SHARES members or academic libraries participating in New York METRO.

There is no charge for interlibrary loan article delivery to PALCI member libraries that participate in the PALCI Reciprocal Photocopy Program. Rutgers University Libraries participates in E-ZBorrow, the PALCI (Pennsylvania Academic Library Consortium, Inc.) patron direct requesting service.

All other libraries are subject to all charges listed under Fees.

International Lending

Rutgers University Libraries lends books to RLG SHARES members worldwide and to IFLA members that participate in the IFLA Voucher Scheme, and provides photocopies to all libraries. International libraries that are not SHARES libraries are subject to all photocopy charges listed under Fees.
