Government Publications The John Cotton Dana Library has been a federal depository library since 1966. Being a depository, receives publications issued by the U.S. federal government agencies and distributed by the U.S. Government Printing Office (GPO). In exchange, the library provides the public with no-fee access to the publications, and librarians offer assistance in their use. The Dana Library has also been a designated depository since 1970 for New Jersey state documents distributed by the New Jersey State Library. Dana receives many, but not all, state documents.
Government Publications Collection at Dana LibraryCurrently, the library selects and acquires approximately 50 percent of the federal depository publications, covering a wide range of subjects in a variety of formats, including paper, microfiche, CD-ROM, DVD, diskette, and online. Publications are selected in areas that support the curriculum and research of the faculty and students on Newark Campus of Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey. It is one of the four depository libraries in the city of Newark. Of the subject areas in which it selects, the library maintains an excellent collection of government publications on business and economics by agencies such as the Labor Department, the Small Business Administration, the International Trade Commission, the Securities and Exchange Commission, and the Internal Revenue Service. It has a sizable collection on U.S. census dating back to the 1790 census. Also particularly strong is the collection of health related documents, especially those dealing with health statistics. A rich collection of publications from the State Department and the Defense Department centered on military history supports undergraduate and graduate programs in history and political science. There is also a fair amount of the serial publications of the U.S. Geological Survey. Searching for Government PublicationsRecently received federal government publications (August 2002+) are cataloged and can be found in IRIS, the online catalog of the Rutgers University Libraries (RUL). The majority of the earlier publications in Rutgers Libraries are not included in IRIS. Search The Catalog of U.S. Government Publications for items published since 1976. The database contains information about publications of all types issued by the federal agencies, including monographs, journals, bulletins, reports, congressional documents, etc. It also provides links to full-text of many publications. There are various ways to locate publications in other formats if they are not available full-text online. Many of the publications are available at Dana Library except the items issued by the judicial and legislative branches, which are collected by the Rutgers Law Library-Newark. The Newark Public Library, a regional depository, receives all depository items. Most of the federal publications are also available at Rutgers Alexander Library. It is important to keep a copy of the citation that has the title, author/agency name, and SuDocs number of the publication. The phone number for Dana's Reference Desk is 973/353-5901. For documents published before 1976, ask reference librarians for assistance in use of the print catalog available in the library. View the RUL Subject Research Guide, Internet Resources and Research Tools: Federal Government for a complete listing of online indexes, catalogs, full-text databases, and other resources for locating information on federal government and its published information. The New Jersey state documents in the Dana Library are cataloged and included in IRIS. They may be searched by title, subject (the Library of Congress subject headings), author/agency name, and call number. For Dana's holdings of the state documents published before 1984, use the card catalog located in the reference area. More online resources are available in the RUL Subject Research Guide, Internet Resources and Research Tools: New Jersey State and Local Governments.
