CAREER DEVELOPMENT RESOURCES FOR FACULTY
 

An academic career has many facets such as teaching, research, and service. The books on this list may be of interest to new faculty in exploring some of these responsibilities. All titles are in the Paul Robeson Library. The library has other sources which may be of interest to faculty in all stages of their academic life, including publishing guides to journals in specific disciplines. The other Rutgers libraries will have additional titles.

Boice, Robert. The New Faculty Member: Support and Fostering Professional Development. San Francisco: Jossey Bass, 1992. LB 1778.2 .B65 1992
Although designed as a study of new faculty members, his conclusions can be used as a guide to what academics need to do to succeed and what pitfalls to a void.
Braskamp, Larry A. and John C. Ory. Assessing Faculty Work. San Francisco: Jossey-Bass, 1994. LB 2333 .B68 1994
This book could be used as a guide to designing a faculty assessment program, or for self-assessment. The authors discuss setting expectations, collecting and organizing credible evidence of productivity, and evaluation of that evidence. There are several appendices and a good bibliography.

A comprehensive overview of faculty responsibilities -- teaching, advising, publishing, committee work, and tenure. Arranged so that the reader can locate information on a particular topic easily.
Flood, Barbara J. and Joy K. Moll. The Professor Business: A Teaching Primer for Faculty. Medford, NJ: Learned Information, Inc., 1990. LB 2331 .F56 1990
This title covers not only all aspects of teaching, but also other professional roles and responsibilities. Written in a sensible and straight forward style.

An overview of the categories of scholarly publishing, including journal articles, books, and textbooks, and the researching and writing process.

Includes chapters on academic advising, career advising, advising special populations, advising culturally diverse students, adviser development and training, and other related issues.
McKeachie, Wilbert James. Teaching Tips: A Guidebook for the Beginning College Teacher. Lexington, MA: Heath, 1969 LB 1738 .M25 1969
This is a classic teaching guide. He covers many, if not all, of the situations and questions new teachers will face.
Zanna, Mark P. and John M. Darley [eds]. The Compleat Academic. NY: Random House, 1987. H 61 .C584825 1987
A collection of essays on how to adjust to the new role as faculty member. Chapters include "The Hiring Process," "Controlling One's Career," "Power and Politics in Academic Departments." Good, well-written, succinct, very helpful. Although it focuses on psychology, the information is of use to faculty in all disciplines.
