Shortly after the Ferm's arrival at Stelton, Elizabeth noticed that the younger children were often left alone with nothing to do. She therefore founded a kindergarten at Stelton, the success of which convinced the board of management that the Ferms were needed as permanent directors of the school (ca.1922-24).
