Elizabeth, a longtime teacher, sparked Alexis' interest in teaching and they both taught at various experimental schools in New York for many years. In 1913, they left New York for a farm in Hampton, Connecticut, where they lived until moving to the Modern School in Stelton, New Jersey. Below, Elizabeth Ferm stands outside their Hampton, CT farm (ca.1918).
