The Ferm's tenure at Stelton lasted until 1925, when they left due to parents' criticisms regarding the crafts-based curriculum. They returned to the school in 1933. Elizabeth died in 1944 but Alexis stayed until 1948, when he retired to a single-tax colony in Fairhope, Alabama. Above is a picture of Alexis Ferm in Fairhope, AL (1955).
