New! Oxford Dictionary of National Biography

If your research leads you to study the lives of some fine Englishmen, and women, you will find the Libraries new electronic resource to be a jolly good show.

The Oxford Dictionary of National Biography contains the biographies of more than 50,000 famous deceased people. Biographies are not limited to just Britons but also those "who left their mark on the history of the British Isles." In addition to the names of people with biographies, the online version allows limiting by sex, religion, dates, fields of interest, and the presence of images. Full-text searching is available, as are searches by contributor or searches of bibliographies. For example, a search of the phrase "Gunpowder Plot" calls up more than 180 biographies of individuals in some way associated with the plot.

Users can access Oxford Dictionary of National Biography from the frontpage of the Libraries' website, either through IRIS or by following the path: Research Resources > Indexes and Databases > Arts and Humanities > General Arts and Humanities > Oxford Dictionary of National Biography.
