New Orleans proclamation praises IJS director

In August Mayor Ray Nagin presented a proclamation from the city of New Orleans to Dan Morgenstern, director of the Institute of Jazz Studies at Rutgers-Newark. The proclamation recognized Dan's continued involvement in the Satchmo Summerfest, an annual event held in the French Quarter of New Orleans where participants "pay tribute to the life, legacy and music of Louis 'Satchmo' Armstrong as well as to immerse themselves in the culture, food, music, and everything that New Orleans has to offer." (description in quotes from http://www.fqfi.org/satchmosummerfest/). The August 2009 event was the 9th annual Satchmo Summerfest and Dan has attended them all.

The proclamation read:
"Be it known that Mayor C. Ray Nagin, City of New Orleans,
has this day proclaimed a special day of honor
bestowed upon Dan Morgenstern
In recognition of your exemplary work
in perpetuating the study and performance of jazz.
We salute and thank you for your support
in the development of Satchmo Summerfest
and for your unwavering commitment to the City of New Orleans.
Attested to this Second Day of August 2009.
signed by Mayor C. Ray Nagin

Congratulations Dan, on a receiving a glowing tribute from one of America's most soulful cities!
