Opening Reception for Portuguese Tiles Exhibit at Dana Library/Sept. 20th
A set of talks on Portuguese language & culture and a concert will mark the opening of an exciting new exhibit at the John Cotton Dana Library on the Rutgers-Newark campus on Wednesday September 20th.
The new exhibit, "The Art of Azulejo in Portugal," is made up of 21 posters with text and photographs. They describe the history and significant role of the tile in Portuguese culture. The exhibit will also feature other media, such as books and a tile example. The exhibit will be on display in the Dana Library Gallery until October 23rd.
The opening reception events on September 20th begin at 2:30 pm in the Dana Room with a lecture on the Portuguese language and Lusophony by Dr.Francisco Nuno Ramos, Director of Portuguese Language Studies and Culture Exchange Services, Instituto Camoes, in Lisbon. At 4:00 pm Dr. Antonio Augusto Joel, the "leitor" or lecturer newly assigned to the Newark Campus through the sponsorship of the Lecturer in Portuguese Language and Culture Program of the Instituto Camoes, will offer greetings. The Newark Campus has been a participant in this program since 1974. At 5:00 pm there will be a concert of traditional Portuguese music performed by the Companhia das Musicas in Bradley Hall.
The exhibit and the programs represent a few of several events planned to celebrate the inauguration of the expanded Portuguese Studies program offered by the FAS-N Department of Classical and Modern Languages and Literatures.
