Wide Resource For Music Scholars & Fans
The Libraries new resource, The New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians Online (New Grove II Online), contains the full text of the 29-volume print edition, with over 29,000 articles on the topic of musicians and music from ancient times to the present, including non-western and folk music. Articles cover such topics as people, composers, performers, music scholars, librettists, people notable for their influence on or contribution to the world of music, patrons, publishers, instrument makers, and others in the business of music, musical genres and forms, musical instruments, places, organizations and institutions, and musicology theory and criticism.
The contents of the New Grove Dictionary of Opera, with more than 11,000 articles, and the New Grove Dictionary of Jazz (beginning November 2001), with more than 4500 articles, are also incorporated into New Grove II Online. New Grove II Online also provides context-sensitive links to additional resources on the Web, including sites providing sound, such as: sites that offer digital recordings; specialized online collections of instrument recordings; composer sites; online archives of recordings of world instruments.
The New Grove II Online offers contextual links to composer sites, specialized bibliographical resources, sites run by professional societies and organizations, sheet music publishers, record companies, retailers, symphony orchestra sites.
Articles are written by scholars with expertise in the area of the subject matter, and include bibliographies pointing to important works of scholarship on the topic. Articles are selectively cross-indexed to lead to further significant discussion of the topic.Users can access the New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians or New Grove II from the frontpage of the Libraries website, either through IRIS or through the Indexes & Databases alphabetical lists or by subject in the index sub-categories:
