Library Notices Become Electronic Beginning August 13, 2001, Rutgers University Libraries will load email addresses directly from university address records (the Rutgers Online Directory) and will deliver all library notices as email messages. Email provides the fastest, most reliable, and cost effective means of delivering library notices when materials users have checked out are overdue or recalled by another borrower. This change is consistent with the university’s growing use of email to communicate with students, faculty, and staff. It is also the first phase of a system enhancement that will allow the Libraries to notify users by email when their interlibrary loan materials and items they request from other Rutgers libraries arrive at their pickup library. Rutgers University Students, Faculty, and Staff To continue receiving email notification from the Libraries, users must first ascertain that their email address is listed in the Rutgers Online Directory. Users are asked to visit the Rutgers University website at http://www.rutgers.edu/ and click on the Find: People link, to display their record. Beginning August 13, 2001, whatever email address users have listed in the Rutgers Online Directory will be the only email address to which the Libraries will send correspondence regarding their library account. (To enter or update an email address in the Rutgers Online Directory, please refer to the How To Enter or Update Your Email Address in the Rutgers Online Directory section below.) If a user does not have an email address listed in the Rutgers Online Directory, they will receive all correspondence from the Libraries via campus or U.S. mail. It is the user's responsibility to read their email messages regularly. Library fines will not be waived if someone fails to read their email and respond to recall and overdue notices. Users must make all updates to their record in the Rutgers Online Directory directly. Beginning August 13, 2001, library staff will no longer be able to edit the email address in library records. Guest, Alumni, and Other Library Borrowers Guest, alumni, and other library borrowers can continue to ask library staff to update their email and home addresses at the circulation desk of any Rutgers library or by writing to the Ask A Librarian service available on the Libraries’ website at http://www.libraries.rutgers.edu/. Please note that it is a user's responsibility to read their email messages regularly. Library fines will not be waived if someone fails to read their email and respond to recall and overdue notices.
