Personal Stories "Unfolding," in Artist's Book Exhibition
at Dana Library; Opens Nov. 7th
The artist's books of Mindy Belloff, proprietor of Intima Press in New York, will be featured in the exhibition "Unfolding" at the John Cotton Dana Library on the Rutgers Newark campus, from November 7th through February 15th. An exhibition reception, free and open to the public, will be held on Thursday November 13th starting at 6:00 pm.
Ms. Belloff, a mixed media installation and book artist, has taught book arts at the Center for the Book Arts, the New York Public Library and the American Museum of Folk Art. She conveys personal narratives in her book works that vividly integrate imagery and text. By sharing her inner struggles, Ms. Belloff seeks to make viewers conscious of their own inner worlds.
Ms. Belloff's art works have been exhibited at the Denver Public Library, the Banff Center for the Arts (Canada), the Atlanta Contemporary Art Center, P.S. 122 in New York, and the Sculpture Center in New York City. Describing Ms. Belloff's installation at the Bronx Museum of the Arts in 1994, New York Times art reviewer Holland Cotter wrote: "The show gets off to a nice start with Mindy Belloff's installation of dozens of tiny paintings ... Predominantly black and white, the installation has a mournful air, made literal when Ms. Belloff writes on one painting "I still get overwhelmed when I think of her" and the single word "endure" on another."
Ms. Belloff's books are held in major collections including the Victoria & Albert Museum National Art Library in London, England; the National Museum of Women in the Arts in Washington, DC; the Yale University Art of the Book Collection; the Columbia University Rare Book & Manuscript Collection; and in many other special collections and archives. Ms. Belloff is a MacDowell Fellow and recipient of other prestigious artist's grants.
