TitleIsaac of Antioch's Homily on the royal city
DescriptionIn this volume, Moss gives an introduction, edition, and translation of an important poem (in the seven-syllable meter) from “Isaac of Antioch.” The name Isaac of Antioch in fact covers at least four individuals, but the Isaac that authored this poem is probably Isaac of Amid, who is mentioned as a student of Ephrem. The poem relates events from the fourth century, when Huns attacked Constantinople in the 440s. Few of Isaac’s poems have been translated into English, so this is an especially valuable work. The edition, from a single manuscript of the British Museum (now Library), includes textual notes, and the translation also has brief commentary. These two articles originally appeared in the Zeitschrift für Semitistik und verwandte Gebiete, nos. 7 (1929) and 8 (1932).
NoteTranslated into English from a manuscript in the British Library (formerly Museum).
