TitleSyrisch-arabische Glossen. Erster Band: Autographie einter Gothasiche Handschrift enthalten Bar Ali's Lexikon von Alif bis Mim
Extent295 page(s)
DescriptionThe lexicon of Isho Bar Ali, a physician of the ninth century, stands together with that of Bar Bahlul as our chief heritage of pre-modern Syriac lexicography on a large scale. The Syriac-Arabic dictionary includes both Syriac words and a large number of Greek words met in Syriac literature. Hoffmann has reproduced the first half of Bar Ali’s lexicon (in handwritten Syriac and Arabic scripts) together with a critical apparatus. The preface (in German) contains information on the manuscripts used: the Gotha manuscript (16th century) that is the basis for the work, as well as the other material in Berlin that rests on various other manuscripts. The book, together with Gottheil’s edition of the second half of the work (1908), will be of interest to advanced Syriac scholars and lexicographers, as well as readers interested in the language contact of Syriac and Arabic in the tenth century.
