DescriptionS. E. Assemani, who was very familiar with the important libraries of Italy, here presents descriptions of the oriental collections of two Florentine libraries, the Laurentian and Palatine. He includes texts written in Syriac, Arabic (including Garshuni and Judeo-Arabic), Coptic, Ethiopic, Persian, Turkish, and Hebrew. Each manuscript is described in terms of content, script, size, and (where possible) date. The Palatine collection is by far the largest of the two libraries and includes a variety of genres, such as biblical texts, liturgy, history, Muslim legal texts, Qur’ans and commentaries, lexicography and grammar. The volume also contains 26 plates from an old Syriac manuscript, including Gospel Canons. The body of the catalog itself simply lists the contents in Latin, while a supplement before the catalog begins gives the titles of the mentioned works in their original language and script. Four indices round off the work: writers and their works, scribes, manuscript owners, and subjects.
