TitleAnecdota Syriaca: Unpublished Syriac materials. Volume 1
Extent334 page(s)
DescriptionJ. P. N. Land spent 1857-58 in London studying Syriac manuscripts. These four volumes are the result of that labor, and they remain an essential source for Syriac students interested in a variety of material. Volume 1 contains Land’s prolegomena, on his time in London and his activities there; in addition he offers a detailed treatment of Syriac paleography based on his work. This volume also has 28 plates from the manuscripts Land examined, and they provide a survey of Syriac scripts. Finally, a number of short historical texts are included, in Syriac and Latin, with notes. Volume 2 contains, in Syriac only, John of Ephesus’s Lives of the Eastern Saints and excerpts of his Ecclesiastical History, both of which are essential resources for sixth century church history. In volume 3, Land offers the Syriac text of Psuedo-Zacharias Rhetor’s Ecclesiastical History, and in volume 4, Paul the Persian’s Treatise on Logic and the Syriac Physiologus, a book on animals, both in Syriac and Latin with notes. The last volume also includes materials (and plates) on Christian Palestinian Aramaic. Each volume contains an introduction and a Latin table of contents.
NoteTranslated into Latin, with sections in Aramaic and Syriac.
