This guide is intended to serve as a small sample of the hundreds of materials regarding the history of Africa to be found among the various microform collections at Rutgers University Libraries.Not every item on this list has a record in IRIS. You may also want to consult the government publications collection and the Alexander Library Microform Database. This sample draws heavily from microforms of the colonial periods and women's rights issues in Africa. A majority of these materials are pulled from Alexander Library's Microform Collection and the Gerritsen Collection of Women's History that located at Douglass Library.

This is a text of a report filed by Duarte Lopes, an explorer from Portugal, during his missions to the Congo circa the late 1590s. The primary subject matter is the geography and culture of the indigenous peoples. This is part of the Early English Books microfilm collection, so in reading the call number note that the number after the colon is the placement of the material on the reel.

This is a dissertation from Southern Illinois University's Government Department in 1966. It covers American intervention in the Congo from 1960-1964 during the period of Congolese Independence and the height of Patrice Lumumba's popularity in the Congo. The dissertation also includes other historical sketches of United Nations involvement in the Congo.

This material is from 1911, but gives a very rich historical account of the colonization of the Congo by Belgium, including appendices of Belgian government documents on the matter.

It is of primary interest that he provides a rich description of the culture of Ethiopia which was communicated to him by a Mr. DuPau who was a resident of Ethiopia (Abyssina) for several years while the explorer was at port there.

The author discusses Arabic/African Muslim notions of beauty, divorce, and the roles of women in society including that as slaves within the culture, among a panoply of different sociological topics. Included are over ninety illustrations and pictures all captured by the author.

This is a collection of different pamphlets that originate from Nigeria, both during their late colonial period and their early independence period. Some of the pamphlets scope includes; addresses of Dr. Adeniyi-Jones, President of the National Democratic Party circa 1930s; reactions to the new constitution by the Action Group party circa 1950s; liquor traffiking; Nigerian Boy Scouts; and several biographies of Bishop Samuel Crowther, a freed slave who eventually went on to compile the first Yoruba-English dictionary.

This microfilm is 1 reel of Nigerian pamphlets. Three of these are articles by Kola Balogun. Balogun, a lawyer by training, was a prominent journalist and diplomat in Nigerian history. There is also an article by Nnamdi Azikiwe, a publisher, journalist, editorialist and former president of Nigeria, regarding a plot to assassinate him. There is also an article by J. Olumide Lucas regarding the Yoruba divinity/patriarch Oduduwa.

Some of the subjects involve the treason trial of former Action Group leader Obafemi Awolowo, the rise of the Military Government that reformed Nigeria, and an interesting article regarding U.S. diplomatic involvement in Nigeria.
