How Do I Use Avery Index to Architectural Periodicals?
Avery Index to Architectural Periodicals is the chief bibliographic resource for finding scholarly articles and
chapters in books relating to the field of architectural history. Please note that Avery is a citation-based index;
full-text content of the articles is NOT available within the index.
-
To use Avery, visit the homepage of the Rutgers University Libraries at
http://www.libraries.rutgers.edu
Click on "Find Articles."
Click on "Indexes and Databases."
Click "Arts and Humanities," then "Art" and then the database name.
Or scroll through the "By Title" database listings to "Avery"
At the next screen, click "Connect."
-
The search screen will appear. Make sure "AveryIndex is chosen in the "Search in Database"
dropdown menu. There are three primary ways to search Avery in "Basic Search" - by Keyword,
Author, or Title Word.
-
Perhaps the simplest way to get started is to search by keyword.
In order to search by keyword, develop a few keyword and keyword combinations that describe your
topic. Enter your keywords or keyword combinations (using the word "and" between terms.)
-
A list of records for your search will appear with title and author highlighted, followed by
author, source, how many libraries worldwide contain this article, and a link for locating more
details.
-
Click on the title to view the detailed record which includes availability, the "Search for
Article" link, author/title, periodical title, date, volume/issue, pages, ISSN and OCLC numbers,
abstract information, subject descriptors, notes and accession number.
-
Click on a checkbox to mark a record to be e-mailed or printed via "marked records."
-
Once in the record, clicking on "Search for Article" or "Full-Text Search" will locate the
article if it is available in the Rutgers University Libraries.
- To send yourself citations from Art Full Text, place a check in the box to the left of the article list. Then, on the
top menu bar, click "Print, Email, Save". On the next screen there will be a tabbed bar with the options "Print, Email,
Save, Exporting" Click on the tab marked "Email" Enter your email address, fill in the subject line, click email and the
citations and full text (if available) will be sent to you.
