Art History Resources on the Web: African Art
Extremely extensive list of web links on African Art maintained by Dr. Christopher L.C.E. Witcombe, Professor of Art History at Sweet Briar College, Virginia.

Columbia University: African Studies Internet Resources
Numerous resources on African studies, including many on African art. The resources, listed in alphabetical order, include bibliographies, online exhibitions, some full-text resources, and other materials.

Guggenheim Museum, New York City. Africa: The Art of a Continent
The online catalogue of an exhibition held at the Guggenheim Museum in 1996. The catalogue includes images, maps, and essays.

Museum for African Art, New York City
The museum's website includes lists of current and upcoming exhibitions.

National Museum of African Art, Smithsonian Institution, Washington, D.C.
The museum's website includes an extended online introduction to current exhibitions.

Museums with Significant Collections of African Art
A list of museums (with links) that are not solely dedicated to African art but contain significant holdings of African Art.

Schomberg Center for Research in Black Culture, New York Public Library
The Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture is "a national research library devoted to collecting, preserving, and providing access to resources documenting the experiences of peoples of African descent throughout the world." The website includes information about the Center's holdings, including some online finding aids.

University of Iowa, Art and Life in Africa Online
This site includes essays on African history, a searchable database of the Stanley Collection of African Art of the University of Iowa, and resources on 27 sub-Saharan countries.

University of Pennsylvania. African Studies Center. Africa: Arts and Architecture (Web Resources)
A varied series of web links from the University's of Pennsylvania's African Studies Center that focus on African Arts.

Archeology Magazine
Website of the magazine that contains special online features related to current archeological issues.

Internet Archeology
A peer-reviewed, fully electronic journal of archeological research.

Architecture

Architecture.com
A portal for architectural information from the Royal Institute of British Architects.

Great Buildings
Site for the study of great buildings worldwide, including a timeline of architects and buildings.

SPIRO
SPIRO is the visual online public access catalog to the 35mm slide collection of the Architecture Visual Resources Library (AVRL) at the University of California at Berkeley. The collection numbers over 250,000 slides and 20,000 photographs.

History of Western Architecture
A site dedicated to the history of western architecture, which includes the major stylistic periods and examples from each period.

Artists' Books

Artists' Book Collection, University of Wisconsin-Madison
This database is an illustrated, descriptive index to the Artists' Book Collection, located in the Kohler Art Library, University of Wisconsin-Madison. Presently, the Artists' Book Collection contains over 800 titles. The database indexes approximately 760 of those titles, over 500 of which have one to four images to visually represent the structure and/or content of the book. With the goal to create a "visual finding aid" to the entire Artists' Book Collection, the database will be expanded and updated on a periodic basis.

Joan Flasch Artists' Books Collection
The Joan Flasch Artists' Book Collection includes close to 5,000 artists' books, multiples, video and audio recordings, periodicals, digital works, reference books, ephemera, exhibition catalogs, and examples of experimental art practices, all created over the last four decades by artists of local, national, and international significance.

Classics

American Philological Association
The website of the American Philological Association. Includes sections with links to Classics Associations and Research Institutes, online journals in the Classics, and selected internet sites.

Census
An interdisciplinary database of images and documents concerning monuments from antiquity known in the Renaissance.

The Archaeological Institute of America's site includes recent archeological news

Diotima: Materials for the Study of Women and Gender in the Ancient World
An extensive site on the study of women and gender in the ancient world that provides a searchable database, bibliography, and images through the Perseus project.

Images of Oedipus Art: Medieval Period to Present

Mnemotrix : Database of Ancient Near East and Classical Studies
A searchable database of archeological research on the Ancient Near East and Classical periods.

The Perseus Digital Library
According to their home page, The Perseus Digital Library "is an evolving digital library, engineering interactions through time, space, and language." Use the search box to search for scholarly information, or, see the announcements for recently added resources.

Resources for Roman Art and Archeology
Resources divided into links, texts, archeological expeditions, geographic information, museum collections of Roman arts, and other information.

Stoa
A consortia of online projects and scholarly communication tools focused on Classics and Classical Archeology. See the upper-right hand corner of the homepage for a the list of projects within Stoa.

TOCS-IN
TOCS-IN provides the tables of contents of a selection of Classics, Near Eastern Studies, and Religion journals, both in text format and through a Web search program. Where possible, links are given with articles of which the full text or an abstract is available online (about 15%). The project began to archive current tables of contents in 1992, and now contains ca 185 journals, and over 45,000 articles, in a database at Toronto. In addition, the Louvain mirror site archives much additional material for some of the journals before 1992. Searches of all data can be made at both sites.

Digital Library on the Decorative Arts, University of Wisconsin
A site on decorative arts that includes digitized primary and secondary materials and other resources for the study of the decorative arts.

International Interior Design Association Knowledge Center
A searchable database of journal articles, news items, websites and other resources of interest to interior designers, and educators and students.

American Decorative Arts, The Metropolitan Museum of Art
The Metropolitan Museum of Art's educational resources page with links to resources on American Decorative Arts.

General

Art and Architecture Thesaurus, Getty Research Institute
The AAT is a structured vocabulary of more than 133,000 terms, descriptions, bibliographic citations, and other information relating to fine art, architecture, decorative arts, archival materials, and material culture.

ART-Guide
ART-Guide is a searchable index that provides access to art history websites. The websites are of high quality and academic relevance and are reviewed according to criteria concerning the quality of content and form before admission into the collection. The collection covers the full range of European medieval, modern, and contemporary art history, and aesthetics.

Art History Resources on the Web

Getty Thesaurus of Geographic Names Online, Getty Research Institute
The TGN is a structured, world-coverage vocabulary of 1.3 million names, including vernacular and historical names, coordinates, and place types, and descriptive notes, focusing on places important for the study of art and architecture.

Timeline of Art History
The Timeline of Art History is a chronological, geographical, and thematic exploration of the history of art from around the world, as illustrated especially by the Metropolitan Museum of Art's collection.

The Union List of Artists Names Online, Getty Research Institute
The ULAN is a structured vocabulary containing more than 225,000 names and biographical and bibliographic information about artists and architects, including a wealth of variant names, pseudonyms, and language variants.

Historic Preservation

Advisory Council on Historic Preservation
The Advisory Council on Historic Preservation is to promote the preservation, enhancement, and productive use of our Nation's historic resources. The ACHP administers the National Historic Registration Program.

Heritage Preservation Services
The Historic Preservation Services is a division of the National Parks Service. The website links to program and grant information in areas including American battlefields, historic buildings, historic landmarks, historic landscapes and tribal communities.

Historic Preservation Resources
Resources on Historic Preservation including bibliography, journals, federal and state resources and national organizations.

National Park Service
The website of the National Park Service, or Parknet, includes a section on "Links to the Past" that touches on preservation issues.

National Trust for Historic Preservation
The National Trust for Historic Preservation is a privately funded non-profit organization that provides leadership, education and advocacy to save America's diverse historic places and revitalize our communities. The website includes a section on the nation's endangered historic places, and the contents for current and back issues of Preservation magazine.

National Trust for Historic Preservation Library Collection
The National Trust for Historic Preservation Library is housed within the University of Maryland Libraries, and is open to the public. The website contains a description of the contents of the collection, as well as a page of links to other websites of interest to preservationists.

Preservation Directory
Preservation Directory is an online resource center and clearinghouse for historic preservation, building restoration and cultural resource management in the United States. Included are web links to preservation organizations and historical societies, educational programs and resources, and many other preservation-related areas.

Islamic

Fine Arts Library of the Harvard College Library, Basic Reference Tools in Islamic Art and Architecture
This guide to the bibliography of Islamic Art and Architecture includes a wide range of bibliographies, indices, encyclopedias, and other reference works.

Islamic Art Network
The Islamic Art Network is dedicated to the preservation of Islamic art. The site includes a photo archive, and digitized books and articles on Islamic art. The site also includes the full-text is archive of the Bulletins of the Comité de Conservation des Monuments de l'Art Arabe.

Muqarnas: An Annual on the Visual Culture of the Islamic World
ArchNet offers volumes 1-15 of Muqarnas in full-text on their site. Scroll to the bottom of the page to see a group of keywords lead to relevant articles in Muqarnas.

Latin American

Association for Latin American Art
The Association for Latin American Art is dedicated to the advancement of the study of Latin American Art. The website includes full-text content of recent issues of the Association's content-rich newsletter.

Clave Magazine: A Journal of Latin American Arts and Culture
Clave Magazine explores the Latin American arts, broadly conceived. The magazine contains exhibition reviews, interviews with artists and musicians, and other information.

Medieval

Feminae: Medieval Women and Gender Index
Begun in 1996, Feminae: Medieval Women and Gender Index includes journal articles, book reviews, and essays in books about women, sexuality and gender during the Middle Ages. Please note that single authored titles are not included in Feminae. The indexed material is annotated. Click on "Advanced Search" to begin your search, and consult the Thesaurus for a list of subject headings.

Fine Arts Library of the Harvard College Library, Online Resources for Medieval Art and Architecture.
An extensive guide to online resources in Medieval Art and Architecture compiled by the Fine Arts Library of Harvard College. Please see the left-hand yellow sidebar for a table of contents, and also note that the guide includes resources restricted to Harvard College community users.

International Center of Medieval Art
This site contains numerous online resources of both ongoing projects of the ICM, and websites on medieval art linked to by ICM. American Museum of Photography
This is a virtual museum with online exhibitions and a digital research center.

The George Eastman House
This museum, located Rochester, New York, is dedicated to the study of photography and moving pictures. The site includes a section on the museum's online collections.

History of Photography
This private site created and maintained by an independent scholar includes information on photography's early history and practitioners.

International Center of Photography
The International Center of Photography is a museum and school in New York City. The websites includes a number of online resources dedicated to photography under Resources/Photography Links.

National Archives Archival Research Catalog
The Still Picture Branch of the National Archives has also digitized large numbers of important historical photographs and graphics which can be searched through the Archival Research Catalog.

Photomuse
Photomuse is a collaboration between the George Eastman House and the International Center of Photography. This website, currently under construction, will include tens of thousand of digitized photographs from both renowned collections.

Medici, Godfathers of the Renaissance
Website based on a PBS series on the Medici family. The site includes biographies for many members of this powerful Italian Renaissance clan.

The Medici Archive Project
A searchable database of documentary sources for the Arts and Humanities in the Medici Granducal Archive: 1537-1743.

Renaissance Art, Providence College
