Databases

Here are the primary Rutgers-restricted databases appropriate for business research. Other print and electronic resources for business-related topics may be found by simply returning to the Rutgers University Libraries Business Research Guide. A. Primary Indexes (for locating journal articles)

Business Source Premier
Business Source Premier covers most business and management topics including accounting, banking, economics, finance, international trade, marketing, and public administration. It contains the full-text (or abstracts) of articles from thousands of scholarly and professional publications, academic journals, and trade magazines. This database also includes profiles of the world's 10,000 largest companies, reports for over two thousand industry sectors, and hundreds of country risk and economic reports.

Business and Industry Database
Business and Industry Database is an index to business trade periodicals which includes abstracts, extracts or full-text for all articles covered. Use it for broad-based business information at an international level. B&I draws business news, facts and events from over 1,000 trade publications, national, international, regional newspapers, business dailies, and newsletters. This database focuses on facts, figures, key events, market information and intellectual property information.

Factiva *UPDATED*
Factiva is a vast archive of the world's most important publications, reports and news, focusing on business. RUL's subscription includes these content segments, each of which has its own searching capabilities:

Search: Search for articles on any subject in the full text of 14,000 leading business newspapers, magazines, trade journals, newsletters, and television and radio transcripts.

Alerts: Alerts is a current awareness service that delivers relevant news based on tracking statements set up by each user.

News Page: Browse the headlines and text of more than 100 of the world's most influential magazines and newspapers from 18 countries. That includes same-day availability of The New York Times, the Wall Street Journal, The Economist, and the South China Morning Post.

Company/Markets: Find company profiles, several years of corporate financials, as well as stock quotes and charts.

LexisNexis Academic
LexisNexis Academic is a very large database covering almost 6,000 publications, most of which are available in full text. This database includes the following content segments, each of which must be searched separately:

News: Full text coverage of newspapers, wire services, transcripts of television and radio news broadcasts, magazines, newsletters, and journals from around the world. Coverage includes major foreign language news sources translated from Spanish, French, Dutch, Italian, and German.

Business: Full text coverage of business news sources. Company financial data is available for US and international companies and includes SEC reports, bankruptcy reports, Hoover's profiles, Institutional Shareholder Services reports, financial information from Disclosure, Standard & Poor's, and more. Extensive coverage of accounting literature includes the Miller GAAP and GAAS guides.

Legal: Coverage includes the following: extensive full-text coverage of legal periodicals and law reviews, federal and state case law, Shepard's ® for US Supreme Court cases, federal and state codes and regulations, tax law from the Internal Revenue Code down through state tax law cases, European Union legislation and treaties, full-text patents, the Martindale-Hubbell directory of lawyers and law firms, and much more.

Regional Business News
Regional Business News provides comprehensive full text coverage for regional business publications, incorporating 75 business news magazines, newspapers and newswires from all metropolitan and rural areas within the United States. Publications of local interest include Crain's New York Business and NJBiz.
Wilson Business Full Text
Wilson Business Full Text is part of the Wilson OmniFile. It indexes over 650 of the key international English-language business periodicals, covering all aspects of the contemporary business world from the broad areas of accounting, taxation, foreign trade, advertising, public relations, government regulations, corporate acquisitions, insurance, communications, management, marketing, and computers, to specific industries, businesses, trades, and topics of current interest and concern. The Advanced Search mode allows for searching by SIC and NAICS codes.

B. Primary Databases (for locating reports and statistics)

Business Insights
Business Insights provides over 400 full-text strategic management and market analysis reports on selected industry sectors: Consumer Markets, Healthcare, Energy, Financial Services, and Technology. Each report is based upon unique market research and provides detailed analyses of major markets, examining the market dynamics, assessing the relative strengths and weaknesses of the key players, and providing forecasts for market size, growth, and composition.

Conference Board Research Collection
The Conference Board Research Collection provides over 300 full-text management and analytical reports on topics and issues such as Business Ethics, Corporate Governance, Leadership, Outsourcing, and Strategic Management, published by the Conference Board as well as the Conference Board of Canada. The Research Collection also includes three annual studies (Top Executive Compensation, Corporate Contributions, and Directorship Compensation and Board Practices), a monthly newsletter on economic conditions (StraightTalk) as well as current news releases on economic indicators.

D&B Key Business Ratios
The D&B Key Business Ratios cover all critical areas of business performance -- solvency, efficiency, and profitability -- of public and private companies, broken down by Standard Industrial Classification (SIC) code. This resource will allow users to determine prevailing median values of more than a dozen corporate performance measures in hundreds of industry sectors, depending on the asset size of the organization.


EIU.com
The Rutgers subscription to EIU.com provides access to two series of annual country reports: Country Commerce and Country Finance, as well as nine regional newsletters: Business Africa, Business Asia, Business China, Business Eastern Europe, Business Europe, Business India Intelligence, Business Latin America, Business Middle East, and Country Monitor.

Country Commerce is a practical reference guide to the specific operating conditions, commercial laws, and business regulations in 55 countries. It offers unbiased guidance on critical issues such as obtaining proper permits and registrations, protecting your intellectual property, and complying with local tax laws.

Country Finance is a comprehensive guide to changes in financial services, operating conditions, tax laws, and investment opportunities in the world's 45 principal financial markets. Topics covered in each report include investment options; bank and non-bank credit; equity and debt financing; and markets for stocks, bonds, currencies and derivatives.

Global Financial Data *UPDATED*
The Global Financial Database is the most complete collection of historical and current financial and economic data available in the world. Covering more than 150 different countries, it provides over 30,000 different data series that you can immediately download directly from the web site. Most series can also be viewed in graph format at the web site.

IBISWorld *NEW*
IBISWorld provides reports for all of the 723 industries in the United States as categorized by the North American Industry Classification System (NAICS). IBISWorld research reports contain trends, statistics and analysis on market size, market share of competitors, and industry growth rates. Performance analysis includes emerging industry trends as well as recent production performance and 5 year forecasts.

The Rutgers subscription to IBISWorld does not include global industry reports but does include reports on more than 8,000 public companies from around the world.

International Financial Statistics Online
International Financial Statistics Online is a database of economic statistics produced by the International Monetary Fund. Country level data includes bank balances, financial flows, indebtedness, exchange rates, trade volumes, employment, interest rates, inflation rates, and more. World data is available for similar topics, as well as commodity prices for major internationally traded goods.

Investext Plus
Investext Plus provides more than 3.5 million investment analysts' research reports from around the world covering companies and industries. The database may be searched by company name, industry sector, or by keyword. Search results can be limited by brokerage house or investment firm, country or region, and time period.

LexisNexis Statistical
LexisNexis Statistical unifies indexing previously available through three print products, the American Statistics Index, the Statistical Reference Index, and the Index to International Statistics. Full text or web links are provided for some citations, and the complete text of the Statistical Abstract of the United States is included in the database.

Indexing and abstracts of US government statistical publications is available from 1973 forward. It provides detailed abstracts, indexing, and locator information for all statistical reports of general research value issued by the federal government with some reports as far back as the early 1960's. Materials not linked or provided full text online are generally available at either the Alexander Library or the Library of Science and Medicine in New Brunswick although their holdings may not show in IRIS. Selected materials will also be available at the Robeson Library in Camden and Dana Library in Newark.

MarketLine Business Information Centre *UPDATED*
MarketLine Business Information Centre (formerly Datamonitor) provides original industry and company reports based on published research and primary and secondary data sources. This collection includes:
  • 2,800 industry profiles
  • market data on 150 consumer products in 55 countries
  • 31,800 company profiles
  • 2,400 company SWOT analyses
  • summaries of 87,000 M&A and financial deals
  • 100 country profiles
  • economic and demographic indicators for over 200 countries

Mergent Online
Mergent Online (formerly FIS Online) is a database of corporate information covering thousands of US and foreign companies. The contents of the database are equivalent to the print Mergent (formerly Moody's) Manual series. Information available for each company includes the following:
  • A complete corporate history including acquisitions and changes in ownership structure
  • Lists of subsidiaries, property holdings, and key personnel
  • Up to 15 years of annual and quarterly financial data, including balance sheets, income statements, cash flow statements, and financial ratios
  • Up to 10 years of scanned, full-image, annual reports, along with full coverage of SEC filings
  • Extensive information about the corporation's current long term debt

Mintel Reports
Mintel Reports offers product and industry market research reports covering US and International marketplaces. Each report combines data and analysis of the competitive landscape, supply chain, market-share size and trends, and consumer profiles. Complex demographic issues are broken into easy-to-understand sections, explaining consumer behavior and demonstrating the structure of the market. Data is compiled from consumer survey research firms such as Simmons National Consumer Surveys and Harris Interactive, as well as retail sales figures from Information Resources, Inc. and trade associations.

ReferenceUSA *UPDATED*
ReferenceUSA offers several searchable database modules containing detailed information on more than 14 million U.S. businesses and 1 million Canadian businesses. A Custom Search of businesses allows Boolean searching of many fields including ticker symbol, detailed geographic location, size of business, and SIC and NAICS industry codes. Displays of company listings include internal links to subsidiary and parent companies, where applicable, as well as lines of business, senior executives and their titles, and an external link to Google News for recent articles on the firm.

Two special modules are CorpTech, covering 95,000 hi-tech companies in the U.S. and Canada, and EmployersUSA, with information on more than 14 million public and private sector firms and organizations.

TableBase
This database specializes exclusively in tabular data on companies, industries, products and demographics. Precise indexing and unique table titles make it easy to find and select the information you need. Find market share, company and brand rankings, industry and product forecasts, production and consumption statistics, imports and exports, usage and capacity, number of users/outlets, trends and much, much more. TableBase data is culled from the more than 1,000 publications included in the Business & Industry Database, privately published statistical annuals, trade associations, government agencies, non-profit research groups, and industry reports prepared by investment research groups. For tables from the trade and business press and reports, full text is available along with tables, in most cases.

Value Line Research Center *NEW*
The Value Line Research Center is a comprehensive source of information and advice on approximately 1,700 stocks in 97 industries, the stock market, and the economy. The Research Center also includes options data, mutual funds reports, and a survey of Convertible Stock. These are not available in the print Value Line Investment Survey.

The Research Center covers the most current 13 weeks of reports. For prior issues of reports, see the Value Line Historical Reports module.

Zephyr
Zephyr is a comprehensive record of the corporate "deal": corporate mergers and acquisitions, initial public offerings, and venture capital deals. Deals that are completed, pending, withdrawn, announced, or rumoured are included. Over 100 search criteria allow deals to be searched not only by company, industry, and date, but also by deal structure, deal type, deal status, and many financial criteria. As of 2005, the database contained information on over 300,000 deals, with approximately 60,000 being added annually.

C. Other Relevant Indexes and Databases

Accounting Research Manager
This is a single, searchable comprehensive database of accounting and auditing information. The Standards section provides access to the full text of all current authoritative accounting standards, auditing standards, and Securities and Exchange Commission regulations, such as Sarbanes-Oxley. In the Interpretations and Examples section, you can find interpretations of standards, checklists and samples for particular common problems, and guides to accounting and auditing, all written by CCH's editorial team of over 600 expert lawyers and accountants.

Asia-Studies Full-Text Online
This database is a portal that provides access to reports, working paper series, and journals from Asia's most prestigious research institutions, covering business, economic, government, political, and social issues related to the nations of Asia-Pacific. Examples of specific subject coverage include finance, trade, environment, human resources development, best practices in government, fisheries, tourism, education and women's studies to name a few. Statistical reports on Asian countries are also available.

CCH Tax Research NetWork
CCH Tax Research NetWork is a comprehensive database of documents related to taxation in the United States. The full text of federal tax law, Internal Revenue Service publications, and numerous interpretive tax guides are available online. Tax reporters for all fifty states are included, as well as current state and federal tax news. The database is fully searchable for free text or individual citations.

The news features of the database can be used to track the potential impacts of proposed legislation on current tax law. The legal documentation can be used to locate relevant laws applying to a particular tax topic, including the text of the Internal Revenue Code, federal regulations, IRS letter rulings, and more. The tax reporters, such as the Standard Federal Income Tax Reporter, provide an interpretive description of current tax law, putting individual rules and legislation in the context of the entire body of tax law.

CountryWatch
CountryWatch.com provides up-to-date information and news on 191 countries of the world through two products available as CountryWatch.

Country Reviews provides comprehensive and up-to-date political, economic, cultural, business, and environmental information, with a report for each of 191 countries.

CountryWire provides current country-specific news from 10 international news organizations with archives back about a year

EconLit
Produced by the American Economic Association, EconLit indexes and abstracts more than 550 international economic journals. EconLit source material includes journal articles, essays, research papers, books, dissertations, book reviews, and working papers. The database contains more than 350,000 records and covers subjects from accounting, consumer economics, monetary policy, labor, marketing, demographics, modeling, economic theory, planning, and more.

FDC Reports
The FDC Reports newsletters (Pink Sheet, Gray Sheet, Tan Sheet, Rose Sheet, Gold Sheet, Silver Sheet, Blue Sheet) cover U.S. government (i.e. U.S. Food and Drug Administration) regulations, corporate news, mergers and acquisitions, product development, patent information, and statistical data (i.e. sales, market share, etc) for the pharmaceutical and medical devices industries.

Gartner
The Office of Information Technology has partnered with Gartner Research to offer the Rutgers community a database of information technology-related research on IT trends, companies, products, and emerging technologies. Historical Statistics of the United States
Historical Statistics of the United States is a standard source for data on all aspects of American history. The Millennial Edition is divided into five sections broadly covering: population, work and welfare, economic structure and performance, economic sectors, and governance and international relations. Data relates to the social, behavioral, humanistic, and natural sciences including history, economics, government, finance, sociology, demography, education, law, natural resources, climate, religion, international migration, and trade. Includes over 37,000 data series and statistics from more than 1,000 sources.

Homeland Security Digital Library
The Homeland Security Digital Library is a compendium of materials available for scholarly research in the area of Homeland Security. The digital library collection is focused on strategy and policy in the various subject areas of Homeland Security Research and supports the curriculum of the Center for Homeland Defense and Security (CHDS).

HealthSTAR
HealthSTAR contains citations to the published literature on health services, technology, administration, and research. It focuses on both the clinical and non-clinical aspects of health care delivery. The following topics are included: evaluation of patient outcomes; effectiveness of procedures, programs, products, services and processes; administration and planning of health facilities, services and manpower; health insurance; health policy; health services research; health economics and financial management; laws and regulation; personnel administration; quality assurance; licensure; and accreditation.

HealthSTAR is produced cooperatively by the U.S. National Library of Medicine and the American Hospital Association. The database contains citations and abstracts (when available) to journal articles, monographs, technical reports, meeting abstracts and papers, book chapters, government documents, and newspaper articles from 1975 to the present. HealthSTAR replaces the former Health Planning and Administration database.

PAIS International and Archive
PAIS International, produced by the Public Affairs Information Services, Inc., is a bibliographic index with abstracts covering the full range of political, social, and public policy issues. Topics covered include economic, political, and social issues, business, finance, law, international trade and relations, public administration, and government. The database covers selected journal articles, grey literature, books, statistics, yearbooks, directories, conference proceedings, pamphlets, reports, government documents, and microfiche. More than 1,600 journals and over 8,000 monographs are indexed each year. The PAIS Archive goes back to 1915.

ScienceDirect
ScienceDirect, the electronic science journal package from Elsevier Science provides access to more than 1,500 periodicals from 1995 to present. Included in ScienceDirect's holdings are the following fields: Biological Sciences, Chemistry, Materials Science, Engineering and Technology, Environmental Science, Economics, Business and Management Science, Neuroscience, Pharmacology and Toxicology, Physics, Mathematics and Computer Science, Earth Sciences, Social Sciences, Biochemistry, Microbiology and Immunology, and Clinical Medicine.

SourceOECD
The online SourceOECD parallels the print output of this international governmental organization whose publications and statistical output represent the roughly 30-member nation states which share a commitment to democratic government and the market economy and which form this IGO. Its materials focus on economic and social issues from macroeconomics, to trade, investment, education, ageing society, communication and information technologies, energy, development, and science and innovation.

SpringerLink
SpringerLink is a full-text journal package covering over 1,000 scholarly titles (from 1997 to the present) in the following fields: behavioral science, biomedical and life sciences, business and economics, chemistry and materials science, computer science, earth and environmental science, engineering, humanities, social sciences and law, mathematics, medicine, and physics and astronomy. The Rutgers Libraries subscription also includes the full-text of titles formerly published by Kluwer Academic Publishers.

UNdata *UPDATED*
UNdata (formerly the UN (Statistics Division) Common Database) is a multi-disciplinary source providing official statistics produced by countries and compiled by the United Nations data system. The resource also includes estimates and projections. Areas of coverage are: agriculture, employment, education, energy, environment, health, human development, industry, information and communication technology, national accounts, population, refugees, trade and tourism.

World Development Indicators
World Development Indicators is a complete and authoritative collection of statistics on countries, regions, and economic groupings of the world, as collected (primarily from from national statistical organizations) and presented by the World Bank. Data series include extensive economic, demographic, social, environmental, educational, and cultural indicators.
