Organizational Management and Human Resources Management

Materials relevant to the study of organization management and human relations management are held throughout the Rutgers University Libraries. Research in this area is often interdisciplinary in nature and includes material from a variety of disciplines such as: business, psychology, sociology, law, education, labor and others. Researchers must be prepared to use a variety of research tools to identify the materials relevant to their topics. This guide is not comprehensive; rather, it provides information on a selection of important sources. Please contact the School of Management & Labor Relations Library Reference Desk at 732/932-9513 if you need further assistance.

I. Reference Works and Introductory Sources

The following titles are print reference materials located in the Rutgers University Libraries. They will be especially useful for supplementing textbook readings and providing an introduction and an overview of an OM or HRM topic during the initial stages of a research project.

II. IRIS: Rutgers University's Online Catalog

IRIS can be searched by keyword or Library of Congress subject heading. One suggested strategy is to combine these techniques by conducting an "Advanced Search" in IRIS. Useful LC Subject Headings for researching Organizational Management or Human Resource Management include:

  • Communication in organizations
  • Cross-functional teams
  • Industrial Organization
  • Industrial management
  • Job analysis
  • Organization and management
  • Organizational behavior
  • Organizational change
  • Organizational effectiveness
  • Organizational learning
  • Personnel management
  • Self-directed work teams
  • Teams in the work place
  • Teams in the workplace united states cross-cultural studies

Within the IRIS advanced search mode the most appropriate subject term can be combined with other words found anywhere in the item record to conduct a targeted search. Possible "words found anywhere" or keyword terms could include the following, but use natural language to choose the most appropriate keyword for the research topic:

  • group process
  • human resource management
  • learning organization
  • management theory
  • organization development
  • work groups
  • benchmarking
  • knowledge management

    • Conduct a Subject field search when possible, such as with "knowledge management" and "benchmark".
  • factiva (formerly Dow Jones Interactive) (Rutgers-restricted Access)
factiva provides company, industry, and market information. Full-text articles are available from leading business newspapers, magazines, and wire services. The Wall Street Journal is archived and available full-text from this database.

Due to agreements with the publishers, JSTOR does not include current issues of journals; the most recently published issue of any current journal will not appear in JSTOR until 2-5 years after the publishing date. This resource is especially useful for searching journals in finance and economics.
