Dissertations and Theses from Other Universities: Electronic Indexes, Databases, and Catalogs at Rutgers

Dissertations and theses can be identified using some of the general and subject specific databases available on the Indexes and Databases page of the Libraries' website. Those that are known to include citations to dissertations and theses, including the Dissertations and Theses database, are listed below.

There are many additional dissertation resources available on the web, most notably those created by academic departments at universities. Many of these are likely to be subsets of the more comprehensive Dissertations and Theses database described below.

General and Multidisciplinary

Dissertations and Theses [Rutgers Restricted]
The primary source for identifying Doctoral dissertations and Master's theses from North American graduate schools and foreign universities. The database includes bibliographic citations for foreign dissertations beginning in the year 1637 and U.S. dissertations beginning with the first one, accepted in 1861. The database incorporates ongoing additions for dissertations and theses accepted as recently as last semester.

[Rutgers Restricted]

Africa-Wide: NiPAD [Rutgers Restricted]
Incorporates the information from a variety of smaller databases and covers African and South African studies using information from Africa, Europe and the United States. The subject areas covered include politics, history, economics, business, mining, natural sciences, environment, development, social issues, anthropology, literature, language, law, music, tourism, and many more.

CRL Catalog (Center for Research Libraries)
CRL holds an extensive collection of dissertations from outside the U.S. and Canada, and will order titles not held if requested by Rutgers or any other member institution. The Dissertations subset of the catalog can be searched separately. Materials not owned by Rutgers may be requested through interlibrary loan.

DATAD (Database of African Theses & Dissertations) [Rutgers Restricted]
Indexes theses and dissertations from African universities.

WorldCat (OCLC) [Rutgers Restricted]
Bibliographic records representing holdings information from libraries in 45 countries. Many New Jersey libraries, including Rutgers, contribute. The Dissertations subset of the catalog can be searched separately. Materials not owned by Rutgers may be requested through interlibrary loan.

Subject coverage includes American history, Canadian history, popular culture, American studies, literature/folklore, genealogy, women's studies/gender studies, multicultural studies, interdisciplinary studies, anthropology, sociology, history of science, economics, business, education, music, art, and law.

Early American Imprints, Series I: Evans, 1639-1800 [Rutgers Restricted]
The database will eventually include every book, pamphlet, and broadside published in the American colonies or the United States between 1639 and 1800, including more than 450 academic dissertations, most from Harvard University and Yale University.

L'Annee Philologique [Rutgers Restricted]
The primary database for classical studies and information on Ancient Greece and Rome. Topics covered include literature and literary history; linguistics and philology; history and civilization; law and justice; philosophy and the history of ideas; science and technology; and more.

ARTbibliographies Modern (ABM) [Rutgers Restricted]
Comprehensive abstracts on modern and contemporary art dating from the late 19th century onwards, including photography since its invention.

Bibliography of the History of Art [Rutgers Restricted]
Covers art, art history, and architectural history from antiquity to the present, with a special focus on European art and foreign language materials.

Historical Abstracts [Rutgers Restricted]
A comprehensive bibliography for material on the history of the world from 1450 to the present covering all countries and regions, excluding the United States and Canada. Also an excellent resource for a variety of disciplines including multicultural studies, sociology, psychology, women's studies/gender studies, religion, anthropology, political science, history of science, economics, business, education, music, art, and law.

History of Science, Technology, and Medicine [Rutgers Restricted]
Covers the history of science, technology, and medicine and allied historical fields.

Linguistics and Language Behavior Abstracts [Rutgers Restricted]
Among topics covered are linguistic theory, syntax, phonology, semantics, psycholinguistics, sociolinguistics, and discourse analysis.

MLA International Bibliography [Rutgers Restricted]
Indexes critical scholarship from all over the world on literature, language, linguistics, folklore, and film.

RILM - Abstracts of Music Literature [Rutgers Restricted]
A continuously updated bibliography of music literature, providing broad international coverage of the world of music, from Western and Eastern classical to pop, folk, and jazz.

Alcohol Studies Database
Contains records for materials covering the biomedical and psychosocial aspects of alcohol use, as well as a growing number of records on other drug use/abuse.
