Research Resources: Subject Research Guides: East Asian Studies:
Shelving location & LC call number

The books and bound periodicals in this library are arranged on the shelves according to the Library of Congress (LC) Classification System, which separates all knowledge into 21 classes.

LC call numbers are composed of letters, numbers and decimals. Books on like subjects start with the similar call number and are shelved together. For example, Chinese novels and other genres of literature are classified starting under the call number PL1001.

On card catalog cards, the LC number is in the upper left-hand corner. On the IRIS record screen, the LC number appears at the bottom left of the screen. You need to write down the complete LC number in order to find books on the shelves. An example of LC call number would be PL2693.C35 1986 from the online catalog and from the card catalog.

The Chinese and Korean books and bound periodicals are inter-shelved together whereas the Japanese books and bound periodicals have a separate shelving area. See the Floor Map for the details. In addition, round stickers on books’ spines with different colors are used to indicate special collections. Here are the special collection categories and the matching sticker colors.
