Economics Data and Text Resources

Caveats/Comments:

  • For searchable publications and data sites, check the Indexes and Databases page.
  • The HOT! icon indicates sources that are definitely worth a look.
  • For more extensive links from a business perspective (accounting, finance, company research, etc.), consult the Business Research Guide.
  • Government publications are often a rich source for economic data and analysis. Check the Government Information Resources page for more coverage.

Electronic Data Sources and Publications

Use the following links to connect to online sources of statistics and documents relevant to economics. In addition, much data is only available, or is more convenient to use, on CD-ROM.

Electronic Data Sources and Publications: General and International

Electronic Data Sources and Publications: United States

Electronic Data Sources and Publications: Other Regional and National Sites

Electronic Data Sources and Publications: CD-ROM data sources

Many CD-ROMs are located in the Scholarly Communication Center's Data Center. See the SCC page for further information. The Alexander Library government documents collection also has numerous data sources on CD. See the searchable index to Alexander CD-ROMs for further information. Selected CD-ROMs are described below.

  • Global Development Finance (SCC Data Center) - financial flows for developing countries
  • International Financial Statistics (SCC Data Center) - the most detailed source of global financial statistics

Electronic Journals

For current links to electronic journals, consult the Electronic Journal Lists

To locate electronic journals in economics and business, use Bel Jour (Business and Economics Locator for JOUrnals at Rutgers). Bel Jour is a searchable index to online full-text journals in business and economics. You can also use Bel Jour to locate descriptive information about a journal, such as dates of online coverage, and indexing and citation information. The current edition of Bel Jour is not being actively maintained, so some links may not work correctly. A revised version of Bel Jour is under development.

Working Papers

Working papers report research findings well in advance of formal publication. Working papers are published by research organizations such as the NBER and CEPR, as well as by academic departments and nongovernmental organizations. The links below should help you to locate working papers available electronically. For sites not listed here, try EDIRC, a directory of economics institutes and research centers, or the Organizations page.

Topical Web Guides

The following sites are reasonably comprehensive collections of information on particular topics in economics.

Gateways to Economics Internet Resources

The following sites are general portals to economics resources on the Internet. These are excellent places to browse or search for information when you are not sure about the source or nature of available resrouces.

Statistical and Mathematical Software

Some links to software and code likely to be useful in economics research.
