Special Education

Special education provisions are legislatively mandated for students who meet specific criteria for attention due to learning disabilities or particular excellence or talent in identified learning areas. Resources for both learning disabilities education and gifted education are gathered by several sources: one being the Clearinghouse on Disabilities and Gifted Education. Other resources are listed below. To understand the legislative mandate in N. J., look at the Administrative Code---N.J.. Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) (20 U.S.C. §§1400 et seq). Chapter 14. For Gifted Education statute, look At 6A:8-3.1 Curriculum and instruction. At the Federal level, support for the development of gifted and talented students in the United States has been passed by the U.S. Congress reauthorizing the Jacob K. Javits Gifted and Talented Students Education Act as Title II, Subpart 6 of the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001.
