General Education Information Resources

As Rutgers University Libraries moves forward in its Digital Initiative, valuable resources are being delivered via the World Wide Web and are available to Rutgers students, faculty, and staff. Other resources in print continue to be of use by the education researcher and are often held by both Alexander and the Library of Science and Medicine. Digital resources are available to all on the World Wide Web [WWW]. All three avenues of information access are important for education researchers and practitioners.

Encyclopedias---General Education

Encyclopedia of American Education.
The encyclopedia is an overview tool: broad areas of American education are covered.
LOCATION

Encyclopedia of Education, 2nd edition.
This encyclopedia offers a perspective in education. Its processes, institutions, people, roles, and philosophies are found in turn of the century practice. The earlier (1971) edition is also worth consulting for societal comparison purposes. Several areas are worth noting for their amount of information from several perspectives: Assessment, College Athletics, several sections on Curriculum, Developmental Theory, Intelligence, Instructional Design, International Assessments, Learning, Literacy, Mathematics Learning, Memory, Parenting, Race, Ethnicity and Culture, Reading, Research Methods, Risk Behaviors, Special Education, States and Education, and Testing. Included in the volumes are information on specific people, groups, schools and organizations important to American education.
ALEXANDER REF LB 15 E 47 2003.

World Education Encyclopedia: A Survey of Educational Systems Worldwide.
The three volumes comprise comparative, in-depth essays on the educational systems of 223 countries. Graphs, statistical tables, maps and essay components make this a trustworthy tool. Essay components for each country include: the official name of the country, constitution, educational levels (preprimary, primary, secondary, higher), literacy rate, language(s), administration, finance and educational research, non-formal education, the teaching profession, a bibliography and, when possible, emerging topics of a country, such as new political and educational philosophies and practices.. Web sites are included where relevant.
ALEXANDER REF LB15. K79 1988.

ALEXANDER REF LB15.E48

Encyclopedia of Special Education.
This second edition differs from the first edition in that there are new emphases: cultural competence ("culturally and ethnically diverse"), service delivery ("evolution of the Regular Education Initiative into Inclusion), accountability (outcomes assessments), expansion of services ((e.g., services for infant and toddlers) and the Internet (effect tools for information about special education, tools for teachers.). The encyclopedia still serves as a spot reference with alphabetized entries of concepts, programs, people and events important for understanding the evolving field of special education. Three volumes.
ALEXANDER REF LC 4007.E53 2000.

International Encyclopedia of the Sociology of Education.
The encyclopedia is organized into the following broad areas, with articles within each section: Social Theories, Sociological Fields, Research Traditions The School as a Social System, The Structure of Educational Systems, School Processes, Family and schooling, Teachers in Society, Youth in Schools, and Educational Policy and Change.
