17th Century

The following are a few generally useful resources for the study of 17th-century literature.

Dictionaries:

Contemporary:

Furetière, Antoine. Le Dictionnaire Universel. 1690, repr.
Geneva: Slatkine, 1978. 3 vols.
Note that i & j, u & v are same letters; some errors of alphabetizing or orthography. Useful for contemporary definitions.
ALEXANDER STACKS PC 2620 .F7 1978

Dictionnaire de l'Académie Française. 1695, repr.
Geneva: Slatkine, 1968.
Subsequent editions are revised and not useful for the 17th century.
ALEXANDER FOLIO PC 2620 .A3 1968 2 vols.

Richelet, Pierre. Dictionnaire français. 1680, repr.
Geneva: Slatkine, 1970.
Less authoritative than the preceding.
ALEXANDER STACKS PC2620.R5 1994
1679 edition held in Special Collections.

Retrospective:

Dubois, Jean, and Lagane, Réne. Dictionnaire de la langue française classique.
Paris: Librairie classique Eugene Belin, 1960.
Gives old meanings, with citations. Modernized spelling and alphabetization. Also includes articles on grammar and grammatical index.
ALEXANDER STACKS PC 2650 .D8

Cayrou, Gaston. Le français classique: Lexique de la langue du dix-septième siècle. 2nd ed.
Paris: Didier, 1924.
ALEXANDER STACKS PC 2650 .C385 Fr2

History of the language:

Boysen, Gerhard. Précis de syntaxe française du XVIIe siècle.
Odense, Denmark: Odense U. P., 1973.
Detailed but clear.
ALEXANDER STACKS PC 2361 .B7

There also exist lexical dictionaries of individual authors such as Corneille (the second half is available in the French department lounge) and concordances of Pascal, La Fontaine, etc. CD texts are of course searchable.

Modern:

Littré, Emile. Dictionnaire de la langue française.
Paris: Gallimard/Hachette, 1966-67. 7 vols.
Always useful, many examples from 17e authors.
ALEXANDER REF PC2625.L63

Grand Larousse de la langue française.
Paris: Larousse, 1971-78. 7 vols.
ALEXANDER REF PC2625.G7

Harrap's French and English dictionary.
London : Harrap, 1991.
ALEXANDER REF PC2640.H32

Imbs, Paul. Trésor de la langue française; dictionnaire de la langue du XIXe et du XXe siècle (1789-1960).
Paris: Éditions du Centre national de la recherche scientifique, 1971-
Complete through PE.

Handy references:

Bluche, François, ed. Dictionnaire du grand siècle.
Paris: Fayard, 1990.
Very useful for historical information and identification of minor figures. Little bibliography.
ALEXANDER STACKS DC 128 .D55 1991

Adam, Antoine. Histoire de la littérature française au 17ème siècle.
Paris: Domat, 1948-56. 5 vol.
The standard history, sometimes partisan but generally well-informed.
ALEXANDER STACKS PQ 241 .A3

Pillorget, René and Suzanne. France baroque, France classique.
Paris: Robert Laffont ("Bouquins"), 1995.
Volume 1 is a chronology and narrative, Volume 2 a dictionary of people and events (their own, it's not a collective effort). Volume 2 is similar to Bluche, which has more long thematic articles. Advantages: sometimes catches things Bluche misses, and provides bibliographic landmarks.
Not in library, but is available as a paperback.

Dictionnaire des lettres françaises: le XVIIe siècle. Ed. A. Pauphilet et al. Rev. ed. P. Dandrey.
Paris: Fayard, 1951.
Useful entries.
ALEXANDER and DOUBLASS REF PQ 41 .D43

Hollier, Denis. A New History of French Literature.
Cambridge, MA: Harvard U.P., 1989.
The articles, by the leading American scholars, are interpretive rather than comprehensive, but articulate major issues and provide bibliography. The 17th century is particularly well covered.
ALEXANDER and CAMDEN STACKS PQ 119 . N 48 1989.

Dictionnaire des oeuvres and Dictionnaire des auteurs. [Professor Eisenzweig's books]
These books provide lot summaries, and lists of works of authors, dates. They are available in the French department office.

General bibliographical resources:

Cabeen, David, ed. A Critical Bibliography of French Literature.
Syracuse: Syracuse University Press, 1947.
Known as "CBFL" or "Cabeen", the original volume and supplement give blurbs along with references. Unfortunately the volumes are out of date.
ALEXANDER REF 2171 .C114 C v. 3 & supplement

Klapp, Otto, ed. Bibliographie de franzozischen Literaturwissenschaft.
Frankfurth: Klostermann. 17 vols.
Known as "Klapp", it is an annual list, published in Germany, and best for continental sources.
ALEXANDER AND DOUGLASS REF Z 2171 .K55

MLA International Bibliography
Index of books and articles, annual, searchable by author, topic.
Available in paper ALEXANDER and DOUGLASS REF Z6511 .M62

The Year's Work in Modern Language Studies.
This is an annual British summary of volumes, books, articles. Covers a lot of items with short, not critical, narrative indications of what they contain, by centuries and areas. Single index of both authors and writers.
ALEXANDER REF PB1.Y39 v.1- 1929/1930- (latest issues are there only)
DOUGLSS REF Z7006.Y33 v.1-v.40 (i.e. 1929/30-1978 only)

Cioranescu, A. Bibliographie de la littérature française du dix-septième siècle. 3 vols.
Paris: Éditions du Centre national de la recherche scientifique, 1965-6.
A bibliography of everything published (not secondary sources). While a few items have been corrected, and there are doubtless some omissions, it's the standard for knowing when and where things were published.
ALEXANDER STACKS and REF, DOUGLASS REF Z2172.C52

On-line catalogs of institutions such as the British Library and the Bibliothèque Nationale, as well, of course, as American universities, can be quite helpful.
