Internet Gateways

Athena
Athena contains some two thousand texts written by Francophone authors as well  as  non- Francophone  authors  translated  into  French.  Clicking  on  " 1.  Textes   d'auteurs d'expression française" provides an alphabetical list of authors and works  included  in the collection. Number 2. "Textes en français, sans nom d'auteur principal " provides a wide range of anonymous texts, including notable writings such as the Chanson de Roland. Also included are illustrated French texts, texts of non-Francophone authors translated into French, and the English translations of famous French writings.

Autopacte
This site is authored by theorist Philippe Lejeune and dedicated to the genre of autobiography. The site is divided into chapters, and contains information on bibliographies, practical resources, a conference calendar, information on the related periodical Le Journal Intime: Histoire et Anthologie, and links to relevant autobiographical texts and secondary scholarship.

La Bibliothèque Nationale de France
The website of the National Library of France provides a gateway to a wide-ranging content, including bibliographies, catalogs, online exhibition, full text information and digitized images. The full online catalog of the holdings of the BNF, for both the Richelieu and Tolbiac sites, can be found in BN-OPALE PLUS under "Catalogs and Bibliothèques Numériques." The tab "Offre Culturelle & Editions" contains the "Dossiers Gallica," a thematic gateway to the holdings of the BNF, including full text content. For an introduction to the site, click on "Découvrir le site web" in the upper-right hand corner of the screen.

culture.fr: Le Portail de la Culture
This gateway to French culture links to information about cultural initiatives, exhibitions, programs, and other information, in all of the regions of France. Thematic portals can be accessed via the left-hand toolbar, including French and regional languages and books and literature.

Dictionnaire International des Termes Littéraires
This site provides an international dictionary of terminology employed in the study of literature and how such terms are used in literary scholarship.

Europeana
This prototype digital library, produced by the Bibliotheque Nationale and the Bibliotheque Nationale Szechenyi (Hungary), contains copyright free digital texts. Enter your keywords in the search box at the top of the screen. After searching, you can refine your search results by provenance (collection), date, language, or author.

Modern Language Association
The Modern Language Association promotes the study of language and literature. This site includes information on conferences and other activities of interest to scholars in the field. The MLA does not publish their style guide on the web. However, a FAQ on the MLA style guide is included.

Online Exhibitions, Bibliotheque Nationale de France
A series of online exhibitions, profusely illustrated, offered by the Bibliotheque Nationale de France. Currently there are online exhibitions for Carolingian Treasures, Rembrandt, Homer, Eugene Atget, and the World of the Sun King.

Paris: Capital of the 19th Century, Brown University
This site explores the nineteenth century Paris from social, historical, and cultural perspectives. The site, which remains under construction, includes digitized prints from nineteenth century France, as well as explanatory essays and bibliographies.

Periodicals in Gallica, Bibliotheque Nationale de France
This site, part of the Bibliotheque Nationale de France, includes examples of digitized French periodicals. The periodicals are divided by broad subject area. Note the sections on "Language and Linguistics," the "French Language," and "French Litterature."

Persee
This site includes digitized full text journals in French in the human and social sciences. Use the pull-down menu to see the full list of journal titles included in the project.

La République Internationale des Lettres
This site contains recent articles and essays in French on a wide variety of topics. While the articles are listed by date of posting, there is also an alphabetical index as well as a thematic table of contents.

Wikipédia: L'Encyclopédie Libre
The French version of the encyclopedia Wikipedia, which allows users to search for articles contributed by others, browse thematic content, as well as revise or add content.

Western European Studies Section, Association of College and Research Libraries: French Studies Web
This site links to information and scholarly resources for the study of French language, literature, and culture. Of particular interest are the sections entitled "Reference Shelf," containing dictionaries, encyclopedia, maps and other information, and "Professional Information and Resources," which contains information for those who study the Francophone world.

Word Reference.com
This site offers the ability to translate vocabulary from French into English and from English into French
