RefWorks for Germanists
RefWorks is a web-based citation tool that everyone affiliated with Rutgers can use after setting up a personal account via
NetID via the
Refworks link in the left navigation bar.
- Detailed tutorial is available in bite-size modules
- Download directly citations from databases if downloading is enabled (IRIS, WorldCat, EBSCO)
- Import via an import filter [References>] if it is not (BDSL)
- Add new references [References>] field by field if neither of the above
- ArticleLinker within citations still works from within RefWorks, but subject headings don't
- Generate bibliographies in the selected citation style
- Import footnotes into your Word document using the Write-N-Cite plugin

Searching is by author, treated author, treated work, title, publisher, and keyword, with limiting by date, publication type, and up to 18 thematic and chronological categories.
Notification of new entries via RSS feed is available.
Currently there is no direct export option for citations from the BDSL into RefWorks.
Nevertheless, it's quite easy to quickly add these to your RefWorks account.
Step-by-step directions:
- Open up BDSL using Internet Explorer.
- Conduct your search.
- Mark the records you want and save the desired citations ("Speichern")
- Under your Auswahlliste, select Dublin Core. A new window will open up
- Select all and copy.
- In RefWorks, in the menu select IMPORT under REFERENCES.
- For INPUT FILTER/DATA SOURCE, select "Bibliographie der deutschen Sprach- und Literaturwissenschaft"
- For DATABASE, select DUBLIN CORE.
- ENCODING: ANSI Latin I
- In the box labeled IMPORT DATA FOR THE FOLLOWING TEXT, paste the citations.
- Click on Import.
- Double-check your citations in RefWorks for accuracy
