Dr. Stanley D. Nash, Head of Reference and the Anglo-American History
Selector at Rutgers' Archibald S. Alexander Library, died on September
7, 1999, after a long illness. He will be sorely missed.
Stan began his Rutgers career in 1986, after previously working at
William Paterson College and New York University. He earned the Ph.D.
in History from NYU in 1980, and the MLIS from the Palmer Graduate
School of Long Island University in 1984. At Rutgers, he also served
for many years as Instruction Coordinator at Alexander Library. In
addition he was a Fellow of University College, serving as Senior Class
Advisor and representing the College in the University Senate. Twice he
was invited to teach senior seminars in the Rutgers History Department.
Stan was an active member of the American Library Association and the
New Jersey Library Association, and was awarded the NJLA College and
University Section's Distinguished Service Award for outstanding
achievement in the library profession and enrichment of higher education
in New Jersey in 1994. Stan was, moreover, a dedicated scholar,
publishing widely in diverse areas, including the history of crime and
the police in the United Kingdom, historical bibliography, library
instruction, and the impact on and use of electronic technology in
reference and instruction. He was the principal creator of an
award-winning web page on British and American History, and despite his
illness he had been able to complete the initial stages of an extensive
bibliographic and encyclopedic database on the history of the British
police.
Stan was also a mentor for academic and public librarians across the
state of New Jersey and indeed across the nation, not only because of
his scholarship, his superb reference librarianship, and his remarkable
skills as an instructor, but even more because of his passionate
commitment to public service. He was, in every way, a true model of
what librarians can and should be. He was a witty and generous friend,
a wonderful colleague, and a loving father and husband.
