Materials related to housing and urban development can be found at the Alexander Library in New Brunswick, which houses the major social sciences collection, as well as many state and federal government documents in print (many of which are not represented in IRIS). Other relevant materials may be found at the Robeson Library in Camden, and the Dana Library in Newark.

Governmental Agencies

U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD)
The Federal agency responsible for national policies and programs that address housing and community development needs, for conducting and publishing research in this area, and for enforcing fair housing laws.
HUD Office of Healthy Homes and Lead Hazard Control
Advises HUD on lead poisoning prevention issues. Online Reference Library includes links to regulations, abatement grants, technical studies and reports, and training programs.
Federal Housing Administration (FHA)
A wholly owned government corporation established under the National Housing Act of 1934 "to improve housing standards and conditions; to provide an adequate home financing system through insurance of mortgages; and to stabilize the mortgage market." Current emphasis is on marketing and outreach to minorities and first-time homebuyers.
N.J. Department of Community Affairs Division of Housing.
The state agency responsible for managing the housing assistance and homelessness prevention programs in NJ and for promoting construction of affordable housing.
N.J. Department of Community Affairs Division of Community Resources
Provides training, financial and technical assistance to municipalities, community-based non-profits, community action agencies and other organizations focusing on neighborhood improvement and economic development.
N.J. Housing and Mortgage Financing Agency
This state agency provides financing for residential mortgages for qualified buyers. Also promotes construction of affordable housing and rehabilitation of existing housing stock.

AIDS Housing Corporation
Boston non-profit dedicated to facilitating the creation of housing programs for those living with HIV and AIDS. Focus on New England; includes AIDS Housing Directory.
Center for Urban Policy Research
Rutgers University research center focusing on issues relating to housing, land use, urban poverty,community change, economic development and forecasting, and environmental policy. Site includes the summaries of the quarterly New Jersey economic forecasts from the Rutgers Economic Advisory Service (R/ECON)
Fannie Mae
A private company operating under a congressional charter, Fannie Mae is the largest issuer and guarantor of mortgage-backed securities (MBS) in the U.S.

National Housing Institute
Nonprofit focusing on the issues affecting affordable housing and community development.
National Housing Law Project

A non-profit non-partisan research institute focusing on issues relating to American cities and urban populations.

Report of a survey, led by Robert Fishman (Rutgers University-Camden), of urban specialists who were asked to identify the key influences which shaped American cities in the past 50 years, as well as those most likely to shape cities in the future. Sponsored by the Fannie Mae Foundation.

Report from the Department of Housing and Urban Development on the social and economic vitality of America's cities.
State of the Cities Data Systems
Data on 542 central cities and 10,744 metropolitan suburban places. In addition to demographic, employment, and business data, the SOCDS also contains data on high tech jobs in cities, suburbs, and metropolitan areas, as well as house values and rents, and crime rates. "Fast Look" option allows user to view data tables for one or more selected cities. The SOCDS also includes Comprehensive Housing Affordability Strategy (CHAS) data showing housing problems and the availability of affordable housing for states, counties, and places, as well as Urban Finance data (public expenditures, revenues, and employees) for cities and metropolitan areas.
Living Cities: The National Community Development Initiative Databooks.
Demographic and economic data and analysis pertaining to population, race and ethnicity, immigration, age, households and families, education, work, commuting, income and poverty, and housing for the 23 cities in the "Living Cities" group. Looks at each city in the context of the group as well as within the largest 100 cities in the nation.

New Jersey State Planning Commission
The State Planning Commission consists of 17 members representing State government, local government and the public andi s charged with coordinating state land use policies, implementing the New Jersey State Development and Redevelopment Plan, and reviewing legislation for capital appropriations as they relate to the State Plan. The Office of Smart Growth provides administrative and technical support to the Commission and to the New Jersey Brownfields Redevelopment Task Force.

Regional Plan Association
