History: Microforms: An Annotated List This guide is intended to serve a large sample of the thousands of materials regarding the history of Latin America to be found among the various microform collections at Rutgers University Libraries. Many of the items of this list do not have an IRIS record and the only existing records of these materials are on this guide and the Alexander Microforms. Database. About 75% of this list include annotations. The other materials' contents are made plain in their titles. This list is rather long and you can just browse it or use the "Control + F" function on your computer to search for specific terms within this page. It is organized by alphabetical order by main entry. If available, the author is the main heading then the title. All titles are in bold print.

A two part collection of gray literature among them pamphlets, serial titles, and posters from the 20th century, including material from 1966 to 1986 and a collection of annual supplements. Casas, Bartolomé de las, 1474-1566. This is an English translation of the Bartolome de las Casas seminal work that documents the decimation of the indigenous peoples of Latin America by the Spanish during the colonial period. Casas describes the treatment of indigenous peoples by country.
Colección de documentos inéditos, relativos al descubrimiento, conquista y organización de las antiguas posesiones españolas de América y Oceanía: sacados de los archivos del reino, y muy especialmente del de Indias: competentemente autorizada. This is a voluminous collection of texts regarding the conquest of the Americas by the Spanish, with special attention placed upon the West Indies/Antilles. There is a large index of people, places and events on the first reels and then the documents themselves.
Colección de documentos inéditos relativos al descubrimiento, conquista y organizacíon de las antiguas posesiónes espa~nola de ultramar. This is a series of Royal communiqués, legal documents, historical records and the like pertaining to the Spanish possessions in Latin America, the Caribbean and Oceania.
Colección de documentos para la historia de la oposición política al estado autoritario en Chile, 1973-1981/ [comp.:A.E. Fernández Jilberto]. This collection of papers documents the ideological underpinnings of the political opposition in Chile circa 1973-1981. Included in this collection are propaganda from Partido Socialista Chilena, El Partido Comunista de Chile, Partido Movimiento de Acción Popular Unitaria, Movimiento de Izquierda Revolucionaria, among other movements that flourished in Chile during this period of public unrest.
Colección de libros cubanos/ [Fernando Ortiz, editor]. This is a collection of 30 some odd books, essays, poetry anthologies and the like that have Cuba as their subject. They are all earlier Cuban materials (1800s to 1920s) and were collected by Fernando Ortiz, the famous folklorist and ethnomusicologist of Afro-Cuban culture.
Colonial-Hispanic legal documents (18th-19th centuries). This is an indexed collection of Spanish Royal legal documents regarding Colombia, Mexico, Peru, Portugal, and Puerto Rico during their respective colonial periods under Spanish rule.
Concordances and texts of the fourteenth-century Aragonese manuscripts of Juan Fernández de Heredia/ edited by John Nitti and Lloyd Kasten The call number for this material is somewhat misleading as the location where M-Fiche 258 would be located directs you to the Current Periodicals Help Desk where the material is actually located. This is a large collection of work from the Iberian socialite Juan Fernandez de Heredia. It contains a large amount of material in the Aragonese dialect and also contains what some consider to be the first western language translation of Plutarch.
Crises in Panama and the Dominican Republic: National Security files and NSC histories, 1963-1969. These 8 reels of film are primarily declassified State Department documents regarding the Panama Canal Zone Crisis and the overthrow of the Juan Bosch regime in the Dominican Republic. The contents include daily communiques from the American embassies in these respective countries including summary memos from OAS meetings and recommendation findings directly to the President of the United States regarding diplomatic measures during the crises in question.
Cuba. Cuban Revolutionary Armed Forces. This is a 12 year run of the official journal of the Cuban Revolutionary Armed Forces. The contents of issue is rather varied, but include a range of topics including home economics, maintanence of home fire arms, revolutionary poetry, and articles by leaders in the movement including Fidel Castro and Che Guevara.
Dispatches from United States Consular representatives in Puerto Rico, 1821-1899 These are compilation of consular communications to Washington D.C. from Puerto Rico from 1821 to 1899. It details the affairs of the American Consulate Offices in Puerto Rico prior to the American occupation of Puerto Rico during the Spanish-American War and there are some documents that come from immediately after the annexation of Puerto Rico.
Extranjeros (Foreigners) in Puerto Rico: ca. 1815-1845. This collection of microfilm consists almost in the entirety of personal papers of various important immigrants to Puerto Rico from the period 1815 to 1845.
Finch, Mark S. (Mark Steven) This doctoral dissertation is a bibliographic essay. It surveys the tools and research of the burgeoning field of Latin American theatre as a discipline for academic study.
Führer durch die Quellen zur Geschichte Lateinamerikas in der Bundesrepublik Deutschland / bearb. von Renate Hauschild-Thiessen und Elfriede Bachmann. This is part of a larger series that serves as a guide of manuscripts to be found throughout Europe regarding the history of Latin America. This particular item enumerates various documents and sources regarding the history of Latin America to be found within the archives of various West German libraries. Many of these documents are personal letters from travelers to Latin America, others are studies of Latin America, and others are government documents emanating from European nations about Latin America.
The Gale-Morant papers, 1731-1925: in the Library University of Exeter / introd. by Richard B. Sheridan. These are the papers of the Gale and Morant families. These families are linked through marriage and wielded influence on the island of Jamaica as early as the 17th century. They were initial English colonists of the island and accumulated a tremendous amount of land, slaves and political influence.
Gaylor, Sylvia Katz This dissertation from New York University's History Department circa 1971 covers American relations with Cuba during the period of the Platt Amendment. The history of American foreign policy with Cuba from 1900 to 1934 is of primary interest. This dissertation covers American economic interests on the island and the effect this reality had in diplomatic affairs with the island under the Platt Amendment.
Gerritsen Collection of Women's History, 1543-1945 This is one of the best single sources on women's studies available in any format in one cohesive unit. There are about 4,500 book titles and periodical runs, about half are in English. Guide provides broad category and name access. There is a plethora of material on the history of women in Latin America. Some of the individual titles are micro-cataloged on this guide. The guides, in Alex and Douglass Ref, are extremely helpful in quickly identifying topics found within the collection.
Great Britain. Colonial Office. This is a selection of a larger collection of microfiche that serves as a compendium of the colonial reports of Great Britain on its various colonial holdings from the 1890s to the late 1930s. This is merely a cross section of over 50 different colonial reports from places in Asia and Africa. The guide, currently found in the Alex Doc Ref For collection, is somewhat difficult to find and you may want to ask a reference librarian for assistance as it is the only way to truly access the collection. The guide itself should be reclassified in the DOC REF LC collection soon so check IRIS before retrieving the guide.
Great Britain. Commercial Relations and Export Department. This is a collection of economic surveys done by Great Britain on the Latin American countries listed above in the title. The collection has the following materials: Argentina - 18 surveys, 1921-1956; Brazil - 18 surveys, 1921-1953; Chile - 14 surveys, 1921-1957; Cuba - 10 surveys, 1922-1954; Mexico - 11 surveys, 1920-1956.
Great Britain. Foreign Office. This is a collection of British correspondence regarding the administration of the slave trade. This includes the fitting of ships for its purpose, appointment of key administrative officers, and later the logistics of abolition.
A Guide to manuscript sources for history of Latin America and the Caribbean in the British Isles / edited by Peter Walne; with a foreward by R. A. Humphreys. This is similar to other parts of this series that is a large catalog for the archival resources for Latin American history in Western European libraries and archives. This text summarizes the holdings, primarily personal communications and various government documents, in England and Ireland.
Hakluyt, Richard, 1552?-1616. This is a copy of the reports filed by Spanish generals on the attack of Sir Francis Drake on Spanish installations in Puerto Rico.
History of Women This is a massive microfilm collection of pamphlets, periodicals, manuscripts and photographs dating from 1799 to 1920 concerned with women. This collection is a bit less diverse in language scope than the Gerritsen Collection, but still expansive in scope with some material on Latin American women's history. The guide that can be found at the Alexander, Camden and Dana Reference Rooms are indespensible in attempting to access the information that be found within the collection.
Houghton, Thomas, Gent. This text is a series of proposals for laws governing the mining of precious materials in English colonial areas in Latin America and Africa. It discusses methods of labor, choice of manual labor, and division of profits.
ISLA: information services on Latin America This is an information source that culls articles, information and editorials regarding Latin America in some of the more regarded newspapers of the United States and Great Britain.
Jackson, Byron L., 1934- This doctoral dissertation from the History Department at Georgetown discusses the life of Felipe Angeles, a career army officer, teacher and reknown scientist. The focal point of the text is his role in promoting and supporting Emiliano Zapata and Francisco "Pancho" Villa during the Mexican Revolution of 1914-15.

Kelso, Quinten Allen. This dissertation from the University of Colorado's History Department covers the Dominican insurgence of 1965. It is based upon declassified U.S. federal government documents that illuminate the rationale for U.S. military intervention. Kelso also touches upon the involvement or lack thereof, of international bodies in the crisis such as the United Nations and the Organization of American States.
Knight, Franklin W. This is a dissertation from the University of Wisconsin. The focus of the work is Cuban slave society with an emphasis on the sugar producing industry. It discusses many of the events and conditions that precipitated the abolition of slaves.
Latin American anarchist and labour periodicals, 1880-1940. This is a rather large collection of pamphlets from various Latin American and Caribbean countries from the 1880 to 1940. They are primarily periodicals and pamphlets from leftist movements that were and still are rather prevalent in the regions. They cover topics from Communist revolutionary tendencies in Nicaragua to Naval occupation on the island of Vieques in Puerto Rico.
Latin American and Caribbean official statistical serials on microfiche/selected by Valerie Bloomfield. This is a large collection of business and population statistics taken from surveys and the country censuses of Argentina, Mexico and Brazil. They range in date from the 1900s to as late as the 1970s.
Liagre-De Sturler, Léone. This is part of a larger work that catalogs primary resources archived in various European libraries that concern the history of Latin America.
Mexico. Direccion General de Estadistica. This is a large series of collocated Annual extracted economic statistics from the countries of Mexico, Brazil and Argentina. The scope is from 1893 to 1970 with gaps in each country. The collected version has a guide, the others that treat the countries individually do not and the index for these materials lie at the beginning of each countries yearly annual.
The New atlas, or, Travels and voyages in Europe, Asia, Africa, and America, thro' the most renowned parts of the world .../performed by an English gentleman, in nine years travel and voyages, more exact than ever. This particular text is a journal of an English explorer throughout Europe, Asia, Africa and the Americas.
Organization of American States.
Pollard, Gordon This is an archeological report on the history and ecology of a desert region of northern Chile. It reports on the assumed practices of the indigenous people of the period who populated the region and also discusses the effects of ecology on the lifestyles of the people.
Portugal. Instituto Nacional de Estatistica. This is a summary of statistics for Portugal circa the time periods mentioned in the above record.
Portugal. Instituto Nacional de Estatistica. This series of fiche is the summary of the tenth census of Portugal from 1960.
Princeton University Latin American pamphlet collection. Puerto Rico This is a collection of various pamphlets regarding various facets of Puerto Rican life. There is a large scope in terms of time coverage and the material is varied from Nationalist literature, poetry anthologies and voting statistics from many of Puerto Rico's elections.
La prostitución en la ciudad de la Habana / Benjamin de Céspedes. This piece, circa 1888, comes in two parts. The first part of this work treats prostitution as an institution throughout the course of history from Biblical times, Greco-Roman supremacy to the then Cuban present. It also documents the variants of prostitution prevalent in Havana at that time including male prostitution, prostitution among Chinese immigrants, and prostitution among people of African descent in Havana. The second part of this work treats prostitution as a social disease and an impending danger on the health of the Cuban people.
Puebla (Mexico) This is an index to archival civic documents of Puebla in Mexico. These mostly date from the colonial period in Mexican history.
Records of the U.S. Department of State relating to political relations of Latin America and the Caribbean states, 1930-1944. Department of State decimal files 712.13-738.39 This is a series of declassified documents regarding surveillance in Latin American circa the 1930s and 1940s. Throughout the materials you find news clippings, correspondence, and memos regarding political instability and economic conditions in various Latin American and Caribbean countries.
Records of the U.S. Department of State relating to political relations between the United States and Latin America and the Caribbean states, 1930-1944: Department of State decimal files 711.2-711.39. These are very similar to Alexander M-FILM 2737. They are a series of declassified documents and communiqués that come from a variety of sources regarding American political interests in Latin America and the Caribbean circa 1930s and 1940s.
Robert Jackson Alexander papers, (1945)-1999: the interview collection. These are the collected interviews of Robert Alexander, a professor emeritus of economics at Rutgers, collected throughout his travels in Latin America, Africa and the Caribbean.

This is a guide of archival manuscripts found in the libraries and depositories of the Netherlands regarding the history of Latin America.

Smith, Vernona I. C. These are abstracts of wills created by Ms. Smith in the late 1800s. Her records are primarily of the landed elites of Jamaica with strong ties to England circa the 17th and 18th centuries. There are records of transactions of large sugar plantations and slaves. These papers also show a tremendous amount of illegitimacy among England planters and their African slaves. In many cases, the deceased bequests land and/or freedom to his slaves and illegitimate children.
Spain. Biblioteca Nacional. This is a catalog of books printed in the various European languages that also have holdings in the National Library of Spain. The catalog is enormous constituting thousands of fiche in year order starting in the 19th century. The guide is essential in attempting to understand the bibliographic entries of the catalog.

This is a guide of archival manuscripts found in the libraries and depositories of Spain regarding the history of Latin America. The guide is organized according to historical archives, administrative texts, provincial papers, military papers, and ecclesiastical papers.

Spanish Series This is a large scale series of different medieval texts in Spanish. You should look up the series for individual titles in IRIS.
Thompson, Denis William, 1940- This is a doctoral dissertation circa 1970 that comes from the Political Science Department at the University of Kansas. Thompson covers the role of the United States government in dealing with both the regime of Trujillo and his predecessor, Juan Bosch. A majority of this dissertation discusses the role of the United States in supporting and then later undermining both regimes.

This is part of a series of reports regarding the civil rights of women throughout various Latin American countries issued by the Office of Inter-American Affairs of the U.S. Government during the 1940s. This particular report on Chile discusses women's traditional roles in the familial structure, political status, ability to participate in the marketplace, and ability to achieve education.

This report on Brazil also covers the same broad points of the Brazilian woman's role in the familial structure, political scene, education and ability to maneuver in the marketplace in Brazilian society.

This is a list of different women throughout Latin America that have been identified by the Office of Inter-American Affairs as prominent within their collective countries. They are listed in alphabetical order by last name and a short biographical entry on each woman is included. This was published in 1944.

United States. Women's Bureau. This report from the Women's Bureau of the U.S. Department of Labor on the status of women in Brazil is done in a similar style to Douglass M-FICHE 127 no. 2933. The primary difference between that report and this one is that this particular one on Brazil focuses a bit more on the social, economic and political flexibility of the Brazil leisure class woman instead of the status of women in Brazil on a more general scale.
Waciuma, Wanjohi, 1938- This is a doctoral dissertation from CUNY's political science department. It is a dissertation that focuses on the policy of U.S. non-intervention and intervention in Latin America. It concentrates on comparing United States reactions to particular events in Latin America to the reaction of European powers to the same events. Its coverage is from 1776 to 1933.
Wilson, Emilia Serrano de Wilson, baronesa de, 1843-1922. This text from 1890 surveys the general condition and social situation of women throughout Latin America and details the situation of women in each country. | |||
