Electronic Resources
The Rutgers University computer network allows access,
either in any of the libraries or by remote access from home or office,
to an increasing number of electronic sources--including periodical indexes,
catalogs, the full texts of literary works, discussion groups, electronic journals, etc.
The following is a list of some of the more interesting and immediately relevant sources
for students in literature. Connect through the
Libraries Home Page ),
and click on "Not logged in" to log in.
Catalogs
These (and other) catalogs are also available from the Libraries'
Search IRIS and Other Library Catalogs pages.
IRIS
(Available from the Search Catalogs page)
The Rutgers online catalog offers access by author, title, subject, keyword, call number, and ISBN.
IRIS also allows you to limit searches by date, language, format, and library. IRIS is complete from about
1972 to the present, but offers only partial coverage of earlier years; double check the old card catalog
at Alexander Library. IRIS allows you to request books from other Rutgers libraries and books that are
being processed, or recall books charged out by clicking on the "request this item" button; you can
download or email bibliographic records by clicking on the "email/capture" button. You can also
connect directly from IRIS to an increasing number of full-text journals-approximately 8000 as of 2004.
IRIS also offers direct links to Interlibrary Loan and E-ZBorrow.
WORLDCAT (OCLC) [Rutgers Restricted]
(Available from the Other Library Catalogs page)
Another major catalog covering thousands of libraries in the United States and abroad that are not
included in RLIN. Includes large research libraries, plus most college and many public libraries. Has a
powerful and user-friendly interface.
Library Catalogs Outside of Rutgers
(Available from the Other Library Catalogs page)
The Libraries website provides access to the electronic catalogs of a dozen nearby research
libraries--including Columbia, NJIT, New York Public Library, NYU, Princeton, Temple, UMDNJ, and the
University of Pennsylvania. In addition, through links to "lib-web-cats",
"New Jersey Libraries", and
"National Libraries", you'll find connections to several thousand more catalogs around the
world--including, for example, Oxford and Cambridge.
Indexes To Periodical Literature
A selection of online bibliographic sources, most providing citations and abstracts, not full-text. Almost
all Linguistics researchers will do best to start with Linguistics and Language Behavior Abstracts, but
the other indexes might offer valuable access to scholarly literature in related and overlapping fields,
especially for multi-disciplinary research.

FRANCIS covers a wide range of multilingual, multi-disciplinary information in the humanities and social sciences. FRANCIS includes serials, journal articles, books, book chapters, conference papers, French dissertations, exhibition catalogs, legislation, teaching materials, and reports. Updated monthly. Good for coverage of European language linguistic research.
