Dictionaries and Encyclopedias

Cambridge Encyclopedia of Language. 2nd ed.
A one-volume introductory reference, arranged in 11 parts comprising 65 thematic sections-e.g. the functions of language, anatomy and physiology of speech, semantic development, and language planning. Aimed at a non-specialist readership. Includes indexes, glossary, table of language families, and a relatively brief bibliography. For greater depth, see The Encyclopedia of Language and Linguistics and International Encyclopedia of Linguistics, below.

Concise Encyclopedia of Educational Linguistics.
Consists primarily of articles from The Encyclopedia of Language and Linguistics (see below) many revised and updated, plus a number of new articles, all dealing with the intersection of language and education. In addition to the many topical articles, there is a section of biographies, plus a section on "The Profession" including articles on journals, research centers, and professional associations. Each article has a bibliography, and there are subject and name indexes.

An alphabetical listing of 400 languages and language families. Includes cross references, an index, and some bibliographic notes. Good for students looking for compact information on a wide variety of topics.

Routledge Dictionary of Language and Linguistics.
Aims at "a thorough overview of all areas of linguistics" encompassing "descriptive and historical, comparative and typological linguistics as well as the applied subdisciplines and related fields." This volume is a translation and revision of a German work. Many entries include bibliographic references.

Atlas of Languages: the Origin and Development of Languages throughout the World.
Maps showing what languages are spoken where, plus additional information about the spread of languages, samples of alphabets and scripts, information about word order, and other features. Aimed primarily at beginning students and non-specialists.

An ambitious attempt "to map the location of every single living language on earth, no matter how small the number of speakers." Includes 112 large color maps, descriptive text, language statistics, bibliographies, and an index.

Atlas of the World's Languages in Danger of Disappearing. 2nd edition.
A slim volume detailing developments in the study of endangered languages, a description of language endangerment and language death, and 14 maps depicting threatened languages throughout the world. Languages are ranked from potentially endangered through moribund and extinct languages.

Compendium of the World's Languages. 2nd edition. 2 volumes.
A descriptive inventory of several hundred languages, from Abaza to Zuni. Entries include notes on the language, its affiliation, location, and number of speakers; script; phonology; morphology and syntax; and illustrative text (usually the first 8 verses of the Gospel According to St. John). Includes a bibliography.

Concise History of the Language Sciences: from the Sumerians to the Cognitivists..
Essays adapted and revised from The Encyclopedia of Language and Linguistics covering a wide geographical and chronological span, including chapters on "Babylonian Grammatical Texts," "Hebrew Linguistic Tradition," "Linguistic Thought in Japan," "Indian Theories of Meaning," plus extensive coverage of the Western tradition, from Antiquity to the present. Each essay has its own (usually brief) bibliography, but there is a subject index.

A major work describing the geographic distribution of structural linguistic features. Arranged in 142 sections, each consisting of a world map, four "blow-up" maps, and two pages of text. The chapters are grouped into clusters under phonology, morphology, nominal syntax, etc., and the work includes an index, a lengthy bibliography, and a genealogical language list. ALEXANDER REF. Handbooks

These works offer lengthy essays providing an overview of the current state of research in a particular area.

Companion to the Philosophy of Language.
Features 25 extended essays on the most central issues in the field, intended to be accessible to advanced undergraduates as well as graduate students and professionals. Essay topics include "Pragmatics," "A Guide to Naturalizing Semantics," "Propositional Attitudes," "Theories of Truth," and "Reference and Necessity." Each essay includes its own bibliography, and there is an index and an extensive glossary.

Quarterly issues are now arranged in 19 sections-e.g. Linguistics Theory, Semantics, Phonology, Pragmatics, Neurolinguistics, Historical Linguistics, etc. Author and journal indexes included in each issue, plus yearly cumulative indexes. Coverage not as broad as LLBA.

Year's Work in Modern Language Studies.
