This program studies the codification of Islamic law and assimilation of non-Arab texts--and the ensuing competition between the ulema, or doctors of the law, and the philosophers, who saw reason as an equal to divine enlightenment. The contributions of key figures, including the Caliph al-Maamun, Yaqub ibn Ishaq al-Kindi, Abu al-Nasr al-Farabi, Avicenna, Muhammad ibn Tufayl, and Averroes, are also examined.

The Republic of virtue
An eight part series presenting American history through its visual art, painting, sculpture, architecture and monuments. This first segment examines some of the first images made in America which resemble ancient ones. Jefferson and the founding fathers felt that classicism gave the young nation power and authority. In Washington, D.C. architects adopted and transformed the classical style to serve a new, democratic ideal. Hughes explores the work of artists and architects, Benjamin West, John S. Copley, Charles W. Peale, Thomas Cole and Charles Bulfinch.

The Skin of our teeth ; The Great thaw
The Skin of our teeth defines civilization and gives a synoptic view of the thousand years between the fall of Rome an the rise of the great Gothic period. It compares and contrasts high and primitive arts as embodied in the head of Apollo Belvedere and an African tribal mask. The second film, The great thaw, surveys the development of Western civilization during the 12th century, which ranged from restless curiosity to system and order, as evidenced in the construction of the Abbey of Cluny, the work of Abelard and St. Thomas Aquinas, and the rebuilding of Chartres Cathedral.

Wien retour Return to Vienna
"In 1924, fourteen year old Franz Weintraub and his parents moved from Magdeburg, Germany to Vienna, Austria. Joining some 60,000 other Jews who had migrated from eastern areas of the defeated Hapsburg Empire, Weintraub's family settled in the Viennese Jewish community of Leopoldstadt, the so-called 'Matzo Island.' In this illuminating documentary, Weintraub recalls his experiences as a young Jew in inter-war Austria from 1924 to 1934. A journalist and gifted storyteller, Weintraub reconstructs everyday life in Jewish Leopoldstadt and in a Social Democratic milieu. Recalling in vivid detail his encounters with anti-semitism, his involvement with the Labor movement and his membership in the Communist Party, Weintraub's oral history provides keen insight into a community and era soon transformed by World War II"--Distributor's website.
