Ballot measure 9 1995
In 1992, Oregon and Colorado became testing grounds for ballot initiatives to amend the states' constitutions. Colorado's Amendment 2 and Oregon's Measure 9 would prohibit and revoke laws which protect homosexuals from discrimination. The Oregon referendum, sponsored by the Oregon Citizens' Alliance, further mandated that all government agencies and schools recognize homosexuality as "abnormal, wrong, unnatural and perverse," and that no government property or monies could be used to "facilitate" homosexuality. This is the story of what happened in Oregon, with a focus on the grass-roots campaign to kill the measure.

The 20-minute documentary-style film, hosted by L.A. Law stars Susan Dey and Corbin Bernsen, examines campus rape and its impact through interviews with 4 college students who were assaulted on different campuses. Two of the students were attacked by strangers ; the other two were assaulted by acquaintances. The film also includes interviews with college students who discuss their attitudes about rape, sex-role stereotypes and communication between men and women. In addition, the film presents many effective techniques for preventing both stranger and acquaintance rape.

CBS News special report: Remedy for riot 2002
In this news program from 1968, Harry Reasoner reports on the findings and recommendations of President Johnson's National Advisory Commission on Civil Disorders. The commission's report offered an analysis of the causes of riots at that time and concluded that unless sweeping changes were made, the nation was moving towards two separate societies, black and white, separate but unequal. By interviewing business, political, religious and community leaders in Detroit, one of the cities hit hardest by turmoil, the program assesses possible courses of action in four major areas: jobs, housing, schools and welfare.

Evening the odds is title IX working? 1999
In 1972, Title IX was established, a civil rights act that prohibits gender discrimination at any school that receives federal funds. In this program, Elisabeth Brackett, of WTTW in Chicago, goes to Indiana University -- alma mater of Olympic diving medalists Lesley Bush and Cynthia Potter - to investigate higher education's Title IX track record in the area of sports. The IU administration is working diligently to meet Title IX conditions by creating new athletics programs and spreading out scholarship dollars more evenly between male and female athletes. But a USA Today survey found that only seven Division 1 schools have met the Title IX standards for gender equity. IU does not expect to be in compliance until 2004, and the National Women's Law Center, which has filed complaints against a number of other schools for discriminating against female athletes in scholarship funding, is doing its best to speed up the process.

A fascinating glimpse into a society where women are only now beginning to be heard in a traditionally male culture. Run by female lawyers, FIDA-Uganda has set up several legal aid centers for women in domestic trouble. With the help of a weekly radio show, the centers fill daily with women waiting to tell their stories. FIDA lawyers attempt to reconcile the women and their men in face to face meetings, even if it means traveling to isolated villages. The attitudes of both men and women are beginning to change, but this slow process sometimes leads to conflicts between offical and traditional law.

During the 1960s, filmmakers came to Appalachia to document the dire conditions of the region's poorest residents. The use of the striking images of poverty raised questions about whether media-makers with otherwise good intentions exploited and perpetuated long-held stereotypes of Appalachia. In 1967 this tension between media and community led Kentuckian Hobart Ison to kill filmmaker Hugh O'Connor. This film revisits this tragedy to explore the reason for the killing.
