American cultural history African Americans 2005

A compilation of five instructional films on the subject of African Americans. We work again: A tribute to the Work Projects Administration (WPA) in their efforts to find jobs for African-Americans during the great depression of the 1930s. Negro colleges in war time: Documentary short film detailing the work on American black college campuses in response to the call for military recruits and trained workers. The plantation system in southern life: Describes how the plantation system affected the economic and social patterns of the South before the Civil War, and how the lingering effects of this system are in evidence today. Recreates life on a typical plantation dominated by one crop--cotton. Palmour Street: Depicts events in the daily life of a Negro family living on Palmour Street in Gainesville, Georgia. Illustrates basic concepts on mental health, and points out the influences, both negative and positive, that parents can have upon the mental and emotional development of their children. Teddy: Describes the experiences of a black teenager, focusing on his views of the system and showing his relationship with the church, school, and community.

Black Dju! 1995

Performer Note: Manu Dibango, Richard Courcet, Patrice-Flora Praxo, Philippe Leotard, Cesaria EvoraFrom the sun of the Cape Verde Island, its a very big step to rainy, land-locked Luxembourg, but that's the journey Dju Dele Dibonga takes to track down his dad, whose yearly visits and monthly guest worker checks have stopped. Dju has to face overzealous immigration cops and an outraged police lieutenant who eventually joins in the hunt, becoming Dju's partner in this tale of love and friendship.

A series of events brings them into a relationship with the very English Wilcox family. Both families also come into contact with Leonard Bast and his wife, a couple near the lowest tier of the rigid class system. Leonard's desire for cultural and intellectual status attracts the attention of Helen. Margaret must reconcile her independent spirit with her desire for companionship and a comfortable place in Edwardian society. Her moral strength is eventually able to resolve the tangle of opposites.
