This guide will lead to many newspaper sites with online searchable archives, as well as to physical collections of newspapers. Other related resources may be found on the Current Events and Newspapers section of the Electronic Reference Sources.
A. Rutgers Resources
I. Primary Databases
- IRIS: the Rutgers online catalog.
- Use IRIS to find locations and holdings of newspapers at Rutgers. Type in the name of the newspaper and click on the pull-down menu to highlight PERIODICAL TITLE begins with

Access World News (Rutgers-restricted Access)
- Full-text content of over 840 North American newspapers and over 1,080 international newspapers. The entire collection or a selection of newspapers by specific title, region, state, country, or continent can be searched.

Factiva (Rutgers-restricted Access)
- A vast archive of the world's most important publications, reports and news, focusing on business. Major sections include News Page, Companies/Markets, and Search, which leads to the full-text of 8,000 leading business newspapers, magazines, trade journals, newsletters, and television and radio transcripts.

LexisNexis Academic (Rutgers-restricted Access)
- "News" section indexes and provides access to a large collection of U.S. and international newspapers, newsletters, wire service reports, transcripts of television and radio news broadcasts, and student newspapers. Includes English-language abstracts of foreign language newspapers, and full-text coverage of the New York Times from June 1, 1980 to the present.

Ethnic NewsWatch (Rutgers-restricted Access)
- A full-text collection of approximately 200 newspapers, magazines, and journals of the ethnic, minority, and native press. Over 400,000 complete articles dating back to 1990, in English and Spanish.

Regional Business News (Rutgers-restricted Access)
- Full-text coverage of NJBiz, Crain's New York Business, and 70 business news magazines, newspapers and newswires from all metropolitan and rural areas within the United States.
II. Other Electronic Databases
- Business NewsBank Index. 1986- . Monthly with quarterly and annual cumulation.
- An index to selected articles from the newspapers of more than 450 cities in the U.S. Access is by company, industry, product, personal name, and geographic location. (KILMER REF CD-ROM)
- NewsBank Reference Service Plus. 1980-1996.
- An electronic index to citations of articles from the newpapers of 500 U.S. cities. The newspapers from which the articles are pulled are NOT cataloged individually in IRIS. The index is on CD-ROM (ALEXANDER REF-COM Z 6293. N55); disks may be requested from the Reference Desk for in-library use on PC #4. The accompanying fiche collection is housed in the Alexander Microforms Room and includes articles from the Star-Ledger, Home News, and other area newspapers.
- NewsBank NewsFile. 1996- .
- A full-text news resource containing over 70,000 articles annually from more than 500 newspapers and other news sources, is the successor to the aforementioned fiche collection. Both the index and the articles are on a CD-ROM (ALEXANDER REF Z 6293 .N551); disks may be requested from the Reference Desk for in-library use on PC #4. Includes articles from the Home News and other area newspapers.

B. New Jersey/New York/Pennsylvania
New Jersey and other newspapers in Rutgers collections may be found by
searching IRIS, the Rutgers online catalog, under the title of
the newspaper.
The basic directory of New Jersey newspapers is the Directory of New
Jersey Newspapers, 1765-1970, edited by William C. Wright and Paul A.
Stellhorn (Trenton, NJ: New Jersey Historical Commission, 1977). (ALEXANDER, CAMDEN, DANA, DOUGLSS, KILMER, SPCOL/UA REF Z 6952 .N54 D57)
Many New Jersey newspapers are also held at
Special Collections and University Archives; consult their finding aids on-site to locate specific titles and holdings.
Full-text access to the Newark Star-Ledger is available from 1996 to the present on Access World News (Rutgers-restricted Access) and on Factiva (Rutgers-restricted Access). The Dana Library has the Newark Star-Ledger on microfilm going back to 1980; microfilm reels back to August 1, 1945 are also available from the Rutgers Alexander Library in New Brunswick.
The Charles F. Cummings New Jersey Information Center also has locally compiled Newark News Indexes, 1916-1970.
Today's issue, and selected South Jersey stories from the last fourteen days, of the Camden Courier-Post are available online for browsing; they, and earlier (approximately two years) stories can also be searched at the CourierPostOnline Search Engine. The Rutgers Robeson Library in Camden has the Courier-Post (various titles) on microfilm back to 1909; the Camden County Historical Society has the Courier-Post from 1892 to 1959 on microfilm.
Selected articles from the Courier-Post about the city of Camden are also indexed in CamdenBase.
