Brief Description: Herbal Remedies is an electronic database with information on more than 1,100 plants and on 1,200 drugs obtained from these plants. Full text information is available in both English and German.

To Begin

On the first floor of the Library of Science and Medicine (LSM)locate CD Workstation A (reference area opposite the Circulation/Reserve desk).

If not already open, double click on the CD LIST folder on the Windows desk top.

Find Herbal Remedies in the alphabetical list and double click on it to access the database.

The Start-up page appears with the following search options:

Drugs

Substances

Plants

Glossary

Literature

Quick Search

DRUGS

On the Start-up page mentioned above, clicking the Drugs button brings up a split frame screen with an alphabetical listing of the scientific names of drugs. The list for the letter "A" appears first. To browse, select the desired letter of the alphabet.

In the right frame appears the full text information for the selected drug: usage, dosage, modes of action, use restrictions, usage in foods, herbal drug synonyms, safety, any Commission E Monographs, efficacy, etc.

Clicking on "Dosage" for example displays the dosage text in the lower section of the right frame.

Clicking on the Plant button opens a new set of options: general, etymology, botany, habitat, botanical synonyms, vernacular name drugs, photos. Click on the Home icon on the top menu bar to return to the Start-up page.

Clicking Pharmacopoeias in the upper portion of the left frame lists those drugs appearing in the many international pharmacopoeias covered by Herbal Remedies. For the full title listing of pharmacopoeias, click Help on the top menu bar, then Content F1. Then select Pharmacopoeias within the "General Information" section.

SUBSTANCES

On the Start-up page mentioned above, click the Substances button. The Substances search window opens. Type a search string in the search box provided, or click on the desired letter of the alphabet to begin your substance browse. Once a substance name is located, type the name in the search box. Use the Windows CTRL C command to copy the text. Click the CLOSE button on the bottom of the screen.

On the Start-up screen, click the DRUGS button. In the search string box, clear the default letter "A" and use the Windows CTRL V command to paste your text. Proceed as before.

PLANTS

On the Start-up page mentioned above, click the Plants button. The Plants split frame screen opens. Either select a letter of the alphabet for browsing the plant names, or clear the default letter "A" from the search string box and type your plant name. Make selections as mentioned above.

While viewing the full text, you can click on one of the two flag icons in the upper right corner in order to switch between languages, English-German or German-English.

Printing

While reading a document, click on the Printer icon on the top menu bar. The "Print" dialog box opens. Click Print button. If desired, click radio button to also print literature data.

After a moment, the "Print Job to Ricoh Aficio 270 PS?" box opens displaying the total cost of your print job. Click the "Print" button.

Type your name, code name or nickname in the box in the open "Attention" window; then click on the "OK" button.

Click "OK" button when the "Message" box with your print job number appears.

Go to the networked printer station in the reference area on the first floor of the Library of Science and Medicine (LSM). You will need a copy card to release your print job(s).

Note: give multiple print jobs different names.

Note: Downloading is not available.

Exit/Quit

To Exit Herbal Remedies, just close the open windows by clicking the X in the upper right hand corner of the screen. You will be returned to the CD List folder. You can also exit by selecting File, Exit on the top menu bar.
