Databases

The following databases, all of which are not necessarily focused upon pharmaceutical business, do provide international coverage of the literature within each subject area. These networked databases are available for both on-site and remote use by Rutgers University students, faculty and staff. For descriptions and search connections to these and all other networked databases go to the Rutgers University Libraries Indexes and Databases page.

Rutgers users of RefWorks, the Web-based bibliography and database manager, can review the Rutgers University Libraries RefWorks FAQ. Additional guides and online tutorials are listed below.

Additionally, the EndNote import filter file for International Pharmaceutical Abstracts (OVID) is available here

Business & Industry Database (Coverage: 1994 - present). Business and Industry Database is an index to business trade periodicals which includes abstracts, extracts or full-text for all articles covered. Use it for broad-based business information at an international level. B&I draws business news, facts and events from over 1000 trade publications, national, international, regional newspapers, business dailies, and newsletters. This database focuses on facts, figures, key events, market information and intellectual property information. Coverage begins in 1994.

Business Source Premier - covers most business and management topics including accounting, banking, economics, finance, international trade, marketing, and public administration. It contains the full-text (or abstracts) of articles from thousands of scholarly and professional publications, academic journals, and trade magazines. This database also includes profiles of the world's 10,000 largest companies, reports for over two thousand industry sectors, and hundreds of country risk and economic reports.

Factiva (Coverage: varies by publication). Factiva is a vast archive of the world's most important publications, reports and news, focusing on business. RUL's subscription includes these content segments, each of which has its own searching capabilities. Search: Search for articles on any subject in the full text of 8,000 leading business newspapers, magazines, trade journals, newsletters, and television and radio transcripts.

FDC Reports (Current 120 days) The FDC Reports newsletters cover U.S. government (i.e. U.S. Food and Drug Administration) regulations, corporate news, mergers and acquisitions, product development, patent information, and statistical data (i.e. sales, market share, etc).

International Pharmaceutical Abstracts (IPA) (Coverage: 1970 - present). This file provides worldwide coverage of pharmaceutical science and health related literature from 1970 to the present, and is updated monthly. Comprehensive information is included for drug therapy, toxicity, and pharmacy practice as well as legislation, regulation, technology, utilization, biopharmaceutics, information processing, education, economics, and ethics as related to pharmaceutical science and practice.

LexisNexis Statistical (Coverage: varies by print publication) unifies indexing previously available through three print products, the American Statistics Index, the Statistical Reference Index, and the Index to International Statistics. Full text or web links are provided for some citations, and the complete text of the Statistical Abstract of the United States is included in the database.

PubMed (Coverage: 1950s - present) PubMed, available via the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) Entrez life sciences retrieval system, was developed at the National Library of Medicine (NLM), located at the U.S. National Institutues of Health (NIH). Entrez is the text-based search and retrieval system used at NCBI for services including PubMed, Nucleotide and Protein Sequences, Protein Structures, Complete Genomes, Taxonomy, OMIM, and many others. PubMed consisting of the MEDLINE and OLDMEDLINE databases, contains over 17 million bibliographic citations and author abstracts from more than 5,000 biomedical journals dating back to the early 1950s. OLDMEDLINE, containing the earliest citations has a fact sheet. PubMed coverage also includes the following:

  • Out-of-scope citations (e.g., articles on plate tectonics or astrophysics) from certain MEDLINE journals, primarily general science and chemistry journals for which the life sciences articles are indexed for MEDLINE.
  • Citations that precede the date that a journal was selected for MEDLINE indexing.
  • Some additional life science journals that submit full text to PubMedCentral and receive a qualitative review by NLM.
