VII. Mythology

(The term mythology is not used in a pejorative sense, but is employed in contrast to religion to distinguish sets of beliefs and observances that belong to past societies and cultures and no longer form part of the vital practice of a people).

A. General

Encyclopedia of Ancient Deities.
One alphabetical sequence covering the world, with cross references, a detailed index, and a bibliography. Its advantage is its breadth, not its depth. A single page might include deities from African, Ireland, India, Persia, Egypt, etc.

Concise Dictionary of Classical Mythology.
ALEXANDER & DOUGLASS REF. BL715.G713 1990. Compiled by Pierre Grimal, and considered one of the standard works. This is an abridged translation of the French original (available in its 4th edition at ALEXANDER Stacks BL 715.G7 1969). DOUGLASS Stacks and CAMDEN REF own the unabridged English translation (REF. BL 715.G713 1986), as do DANA and DOUGLASS REF (BL715.G713 1987).

Dictionary of Classical Mythology: Symbols, Attributes, & Associations.
Combines a topical approach to the Greek and Roman myths with a more traditional listing of names. The former approach clusters brief entries on gods, heroes and others associated with a symbol or attribute like "grain" or "hair." There are also lists of characters associated with "heroic expeditions" like the Trojan War-including lists of Greek and Trojan casualties.

Women of Classical Mythology: A Biographical Dictionary.
